Value? Pass? 1981 Miyata 912 with dings
Been wanting an '81 Miyata 910 for a while and this one is in my size. This one has a couple of dings in the frame. I usually pass when I see dings, but I'm wondering what people think about it. Should I pass? Should I offer something sub-$100? I was initially thinking of offering $100. The worse of the two dings is in the 2nd photo.

I have the opposite opinion. You want an orange Myata that size, that year? Buy it. Make an offer that discounts the damage. A little sanding and touch up paint and build it up. How long before thay size, model, year, color falls from the tree. Do you have a well stocked parts bin or would you have to spend a lot to build it? I zoomed in as much as possible on a smart phone and that ding just looks like a ding. Definitely pass if you are jusy worried about resale or as a museum piece. That frame would fit me and I would make an offer and make a rider out of it. This is all just my opinion of course :-)

I think it depends on your goals. If you want a perfect example to hang on the wall, or just stare at lovingly, I'd pass. For actual riding, a dent like that is perfect. It lets you enjoy the bike without worrying so much about the next dent. Structurally, it's a non issue. The top tube is generally very lightly loaded, and especially so back at the seat tube. The dent has raised the edges a bit, so it wouldn't be possible to fill it perfectly. Because of the location, it probably wouldn't be possible to get in there with some frame blocks to roll it out. I would just mix up some touch-up paint, and get the bare steel covered. It won't be perfect, but I doubt you would be able to see it from 5 feet.

There is a silver '79 912 on Hudson Valley (NY) Craig's list right now for $100. It has a dinged (about midway on top tube) 23" frame, a Shimano 600 group, Zefal frame pump, Blackburn (?) alloy rear rack, toe clips, and a mismatched 27" front wheel. The rear wheel is 700c, which is what it was probably spec'd for. Too long of a ride for me to Highland Falls, but if it was a 25" frame.........

Tap the dent down a little with a flat punch sand/fill/prime/paint....proably won't notice it and you are good to go. rolling the dent, even if you could would not get rid of the dent (you would still need filler) and will cause more visual issues..having to paint a larger area etc.

I would say it is likely iffy to ride as basic rules I go by more than 1/3 tube diamater and or buckling, as indicated by the moon cracks in the paint well away from the main dent, this one seem to issue both.. So I would say pass on this one since it is hardened thing guage tubing which doesn't take dings well.
