Tell me more about my Miyata 1000.



What is it's value (I know how much I paid for it, but how much is it really worth?). We're talking about the frame only, because I know the other components are not original.

It looks like it might be a 1985, judging by the colour. You can take a closer look in some of those catalogues.

My '86 Miyata 1000 has a 5-speed freewheel and a triple chainring. Your brakes and brake levers look original, but your bottom bracket and cranks don't look like the originals. The stem and seatpost are not original, either. Your Miyata was a beautiful long distance touring bike. Alas, no more.

It's in rough shape, and those tires make me wince, but the 1000 frame is considered one of the best touring frames ever made.

I took a closer look at the catalogues and I think it is a 1982 and the left side crank looks original.

I'm getting the following Original parts from the previous owner:
Original SR seatpost
Original Suntour shifters (No derailleurs)
Original Triple cranks (great shape) original mks sylvan pedals (missing dustcaps)
Original SR Randonneur bars and stem
Original bottom bracket spindle for triple
Original rear wheel (no front)

I already sourced out an original front wheel on ebay, and a good amount of derailleurs. Pretty happy with the availability of parts for this bike.

That's the catalogue, but I'm still not sure on the year. Can anyone else confirm that it's a 1982?

there should be a serial number somewhere on the bike (probably the Bottom bracket area), you can tell which year it was made by the first letter.

I was about to pick that one up, for $250 it was quite a deal

Is that a matching set of Mavic GP4 rims? What hubs? If you're gonna go original and those are in good shape you may be able to fund a good amount of your build by flipping them.....

Looks like the rear is a Mavic GP4 (In the ad he said it was a G6, but the sticker on the rim sais GP4). The front is a Wolber Super Champion, which is almost identical in color and shape with the rear Mavic tubular wheel. I'm actually surprised by how identical they are. I wouldn't be able to tell a difference if it wasn't for the stickers.

These are GREAT bikes. But, yeah, put it back to original, or at least original purpose. Get that single-speed crud off of there. This is a world class touring bike!

1982 Miyata 1000, no questions about it. The serial number, stamped on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell, should start with a K or maybe a J, followed by several numerical digits.
Obviously there is little that is original on it; the cantilevers and the headset appear to be the only things left intact.
It appears (and this is not 100%, but it definitely looks like it from the pictures) as though someone has put a set of French bars and stem on the bike. If they are branded AVA or Pivo I recommend that you get rid of them immediately, as a) the stem is the wrong insertion size (22mm instead of the 22.2mm that the bike should have) and b) French stems are notorious for breakage. On a touring setup this may be somewhat safe, as little torque is applied to the bars, but as a single speed where you are more likely to wrench on the bars riding out of the saddle, this is considerably dangerous. It may not be a French combo; it is hard to tell from the pics, so tell us all what it is. It may be a Carnielli, but regardless, I personally think that style of stem is a recipe for potential disaster on a single speed bicycle.
The bike has a nice replacement seatpost though; it looks to be a Campy Athena/Victory or similar. I am somewhat skeptical of it being the correct size though, as your bike takes a 26.8mm post, and I don't think those type of Campy posts in such a size were very common. Then again, I'm sure they were made in a 26.8 size, so it should be okay. You may want to remove it and check. Look for evidence of a bulging seat tube or the seat clamp being spread open too far.
I have a 1981 model, which is virtually identical, bar the colour and the downtube shifter brazeons. They are nice bikes indeed. I actually have the original front rack for mine just sitting here, as I've since changed to a lowrider Blackburn version. If I decide to get rid of it, I will contact you.

I've run into one Triomphe post (was w/a Triomphe group, but the posts were shared with Victory just the same) that was, indeed, 26.8. It is presently on QuickDraw's '86 Raleigh Grand Prix.

...and if the OP wants to part with his, I'd be most interested. Still short one for my '84 Raleigh USA Super Course.

EDIT: Just took a second look - this is some form of Record post, I believe. Not Triomphe or Victory.

It is in fact a Campy C-Record Aero seatpost. I have no doubt that it is a 26.8.

I'm getting most of the original parts back from the previous owner on Thursday. The short list is in one of my replies above. You are right, the stem is a Carnielli, and it looks like it is the right fit. In any case, I will be replacing it with the original SR stem and drops.

They look like Vittoria Tigre Cross tubulars. A wheelbuilder I know offered me a pair cheap, but he did not mention the color. I went to pick them up, and surprise! Green monsters. But I took them anyway. They are good tough tubular tires. I'm living with it, let's just say they definitely give my vintage commuter a distinctive look.
