Value of my De Rosa Columbus SLX

Pretty sure it is a 1989...I picked this up AS IS. I didn't convert it to a fixed gear. I'd like to convert it back to a road bike, as it is still salvageable. It has some modern parts, but I'm curious as to what it is worth.

And, here are the pictures:
Note: The bike cleaned up pretty well since these pictures. Pictures show grime.

And the set:

Thanks for your help!

Brian

Also, If anyone can help identify this further, please don't hesitate.

The frame/fork are worth $300 in that condition, $400 if you get lucky. Everything else...maybe $150 if that is a decent rear hub.

that looks pretty rough. were you able to do anything with the chrome on the chainstay? you should really fix that front brake before you try and sell it.

I haven't touched the chrome yet because I don't have the bike at home with garage, tools, etc. The pictures look bad, but it did clean up A LOT...and it can be cleaned more when I take it apart. No plan on selling it immediately. Do you recommend using chrome polish on the chain stays, or something else? Thanks for your help.

Oh, and what is wrong with the brake? It works fine...I may have aligned it

Hi Brian,

Looks like she needs more help than the last time we saw her, that's for sure.

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...hlight=de+rosa

I'd sell her before she goes any further down. Or, get out your checkbook and start a fairly expensive resto process.

Value?

Frame/fork with no dings = $200 or so in this market.
Rest of the items = Maybe $125 in this market.

Lot's of folks would take on a major restoration project on this frameset, including myself.

Gomango, those are the same pictures. lol...I was waiting for you to chime in.

It's in much better shape now...I just haven't taken any new pictures since I got it. I'll get on that soon now that it's getting warm out.

I will do a full project on the bike within the next 1-2 years unless I sell it. The job will be done properly.

I recently sold a De Rosa frameset of early to mid-80's vintage with the desireable 'diamond' chainstays for $150. Its was solid w/ no rust but needed paint. Its of my opinion that certain framesets have a minimun inherent value thats, to a certain extent, independant of condition. I'd say the framesets worth $200-225 and the entire bike is worth $225-250.

Hi Brian,

That's what happens when you get old.

Everything goes, including the memory!

Seriously though, Miamijim had a neat De Rosa frameset for a very fair price, actually very close to the value of yours, and it did need a repaint.

Yours will be heading down that road soon, especially if you are going to sink some major bucks into a gruppo. imho

It might be worthwhile shopping for a very competent painter in your area. At least to get some quotes.

On the other hand, someone may hop on here soon and call a repaint heresy.

You'll be the judge. It's your bike.

.....and I still think it is very cool.

the front brake is missing the capnut. it may look adjusted but without the capnut the arms will work loose. what size is this frame anyway?

most any chrome polish will work, there is (or was) something that is sold in a small white plastice jar. it is great stuff, I look at the home depot for it tomorrow and get the name.

Wow, just saw that it is in fact missing the capnut. I should get on that. I have some polishes at home, but won't have the bike back home until the end of the summer. Right now I just ride it short distances around campus.

methinks you should go back and edit that typo, otherwise you might get blasted, the way spirits seem too flamable around here lately

I would be interested to know how many people read that and never noticed?

Many things that get written do not get commented on.

Miamijim's selling of a DeRosa with diamond chainstays for cheap is unfortunate, but he did not state the size, size matters.

Mine was a 58 and cosmeticly very rough. I tried to sell it on and off for the better part of 9 months and determined $150 was about all it was worth.

The OP's bike looks like 60 which is detriment to pricing.

Yes, I haven't measured the bike yet...but it does fit me. I'm about 6'2"

My estimate was that it was a 60. What size is the 'best' for resale value?

Jim, is there a reason I can't search your created threads? Nothing comes up..

Yes there is, after I sell something or decide to withdraw an item from the market I either delete the pics or ask the moderators to 'kill the thread'.

But, pics do exist. As you look over these pics notice that there is NO internal rust. All of the conditions issues with this frameset are cosmetic.

The images suggest it was about worth what you sold it for. It would have fetched more possible without paint in this case, that lower head lug just looks questionable.

The smaller, the better. 54, 56, and 58 are normal pricing. Anything under 54 enjoys a small size premium. 60 and higher start to see a large size discount. The discount really starts kicking in at the 25 inch frame size (63.5 cm).
