Trek 330 Value?
 

Looking to pick up a Trek 330 this afternoon. Pics and description on CL show it has new bar tape, brakes, tires and tubes. Frame is somewhat scratched but otherwise no rust.

I'm not a huge fan of the bar tape color, and will likely spend money after to replace. Seller is asking $140, how low would be "too low" to start the haggling? I was thinking of asking offering $100 cash to start but I don't want to insult the seller either.

If I got it to $120 would that be a good deal? Also, any recommendations on any specific components things of value to look for when I take a look at it this afternoon? I.e. if it is known to have special components on some models or so.

The size is a pretty large frame (25"), and while it would be on the larger side for me, I don't know how sought after it would be at that price and if I should just make the grab today.

New tape/brakes/tubes, Sounds like a good deal as is if it fits you and you intend to ride it. I would start with the 100 dollar offer and see if the seller counter offers at 120.00. If not I think I'd still give 140 for that bike in really good shape.

I picked up a 330 with all shimano/light action rd triple for $100.00. However i have to put new tires,tubes,tape and true the wheels before its road worthy. Paint is scratch. I think $140.00 is good to go if its road worthy. Mine is a small frame so when i go to sell i should have no problem flipping it.

Yeah if it does fit and there are no issues with it I am probably going to grab it, regardless of the final price I get it to. Looking to bring it to school in NYC and every once in a while run some central park runs or some casual rides with friends. I do have a Raleigh Super Grand Prix that was going to serve that purpose, but I figure the Trek runs better? I want something durable and not too concerned about speed. If I get this I would sell the latter bike to make up for the funds.

$140 is a pretty good price to begin with. Someone else might scoop it up while you are trying to save $20. Just decide how much you want this bike. Much better bike than your Raleigh.

Trek steel bikes like this one commonly sell for over $200 around here (I've sold several myself), assuming they are pristine, good paint, ready to ride, etc. Some years 330 build specs are better than other years. 1987 had Reynolds 531 main tubes, 1988 and 1989 had True Temper frames.

Have I gotten 330s cheaper? Sure, but I look for road bikes every day, in any size, in pretty much any condition. When I am looking for a particular bike, in a particular size, I usually don't get so lucky.

I haven't made any offers just yet, but the seller agreed to have me test ride it in a few hours. If it fits, I'm pretty set on getting it at whatever the seller agrees with. Thanks for the advice though, sounds just about what I'm looking for.
