Help ID old Trek

This was a curbside discovery, a really nice older Trek. It's a little small for me (probably a 56 or 54cm) but is in good shape. So, I'm going to clean and tune it and get it ready to sell. I'm, however, having a hard time identifying it. Based on a serial number search it indicates that it's a 22", 1981 Trek 610. Unless the sizing is way off, it's certainly not in the 22" range. Also, I'm pretty sure that it came with downtube shifters as opposed to the upgraded SRX brifters that are on it now. In addition, it's a 7 speed/triple (170mm Sugino cranks), Dia Compe road brakes, has a chain hanger and only has braze ons for one bottle (on the down tube). Based on its potential value I may try to do a complete restoration before selling, we'll see. Any help with an ID would be appreciated.

Looks like a crash victim to me. If you are patient, you really need to strip off those shifters (assuming they work) and sell them separately. Then pick up some DT shifters and return the bike to what it was. Then I would have that fork powder coated to match the bike. No way you are going to get value out of that bike with that goofy red fork. If you could luck out and find a color matched fork on ebay, great.

Check for ANY damage to the top tube and down tube, the classic rippling which occurs from a collision. That front wheel is awfully close to the DT.

Looks like a 22 1/2 inch bike to me, double check that tape measure.

The difference between all the 61x models from 1981 is the components. So just compare those parts that are original. Not sure much on the bike is original. Crank is wrong, RD is wrong.

So you have it identified correctly.

That's interesting that you noticed it was crashed, the owner said that she hit a goose while training and the fork was subsequently replaced-I didn't notice any damage to the frame. There is some tow strike on sharp turns-hopefully a fork replacement will fix this-otherwise the bike fits. I figured it was a 610/620, I'm already searching for replacement shifters, brake levers, and fork.

ah, The Bicycle Exchange. . . a failed attempt at a high volume shop from the 80's. I used to frequent the shop in Fairfax quite a bit, it's where my love of old Treks started. I'd say that's a 54cm frame. The serial number should point you to the size as well as model number.
The bike would have come with Dia Compe 500G sidepull brakes, SR alloy crankset, SR stem, downtube shifters, SR quill pedals. Your's has definitely been 'upgraded'.

Nice bike, old steel treks ride wonderfully and are in my opinion greatly undervalued.

Nice pickup! I love riding my Trek(s) and I really like the look of the older "graphics). Too bad about the red fork....

does that shift? looks odd with a bolton rearwheel.

I spotted it a crash straight away! the red fork just does not belong and the mismatched wheels. very likely the original fork was HiTen and the goose crunched it. but how do you hit a goose on a bike?

any the brifters certainly look out of place on the frame in general (luged steel) and the clamp on cable stop is a dead giveaway as well. it may have had barcons from the factory but I bet it was DTs

I agree with work101, get some friction or ratchet DT shifters and keep or sell the brifters on their own.

The rr. wheel is quick release, not bolt on and, things seem to shift fine. I've already started working on it. The Shimano RSX brifters have been removed along w/ the bar tape, stem, pedals, rr. der, and chain-these will be sold separately or used on another bike. I then discovered that the handlbar was badly bent (must have been a hell of a wreck) so that went in the trash along with the original saddle. The fork will be replaced along with the cranks, although they may be tough-they were installed with a traditional bolt, not allen bolts and, I can't get a socket to fit inside the crank arm (may try a box wrench next). Any ideas? I'd like to then put a Shimano N600 double (172.5 mm) on it with DT shifters and aero brake levers. The dia compe brakes cleaned up well and there's plenty left on the pads. The wheels should clean up nicely and, I'll have them tuned at a local shop. The seat post has been thoroghly cleaned and will be re-used and I'll put a Nitto 100/120 mm stem on it as a replacement for the 80 mm that it had. The fork may be a problem, ebay/craigslist searches haven't turned up anything yet-may take a trip to one of the local shops/co-ops, it may have to be replaced w/ something new. I'm also planning on re-using the original tires/tubes, they're still in good shape but I'll put fresh rim tape on the wheels. I really like this bike, too bad it's too small for me. I have to start researching worth so I'll know how to price it when I go to sell.
