1974 Kurt Fender touring bikes. German made. Campy Rally, Shimano Dura Ace, Brooks.
 

I had these pair of bikes dropped off to me at my shop on consignment. I had them here for a couple of days and sold the men's bike right away. After selling it, I wished I hadn't. I still have the step through frame bike and was wondering what it might be worth.

It's a 1974 built bike. They were hand made frames in a small bike shop in Germany by a builder named Kurt Fender. I believe his shop still exists being run by his son. They are steel lugged frames without any serial numbers. The only marking on the frames are "brev campagnolo" on the rear drop outs. The components are Capagnolo Rally except the brakes, which are Shimano Dura-Ace and the crankset, which is a stronglight special made for touring. The wheels are Campy Record, the tires are solid rubber. The original owner said they started getting a lot of flats and switched to the solid rubber to prevent them. I also have the original frame pump that came with the bike and an old Peugeot water bottle that came with it. Let me know if I'm forgetting something. Here's a million pictures...

Wow! Such interesting bikes. I hope the vultures don't tear them apart for the bits & pieces.

The components clearly put these into higher end vintage, but it's hard to put a value on them.

Where is your shop located?


P.S. - What are the frame sizes?

Were the rear dropouts cut off, or broken? Either way, that limits the value somewhat

we can't see the dropouts on the mens but I suspect the womens may have be cut by the builder. there may have been a clearance issue. still a beautiful pair od bikes.

I wonder if they originally had drop pars and were hybridized? I think some Moustache bars are in order for this pair

I'd take a guess that they were cut. There's precious little tire clearance on the intermediate stay bridge, too bad he couldn't have used vertical dropouts.

That first generation Campy Rally rear der. is worth a bundle.

This is how they were built for the customers. Nothing on them has changed except for the tires and grips according to the original owner.
I'm unclear what you guys are talking about with the rear dropouts being cut? What are the campy dropouts supposed to look like?
Still no idea on value from anybody?

Sorry, forgot to mention, yes the bike shop was in Mount Dora, FL. It is currently closed due to bad economy and internet sales but I'm not giving up and am going to try and re-open in a couple of months.

We hate to see such bikes taken apart, BUT if you are trying to get the best return for your customers, that would be the best option.

As noted, just the rear derailleurs and triple stronglight cranks will probably bring as much as either bike sold whole. I hate to suggest that, but it's basically true.

Hi, I'm sure these bikes are long gone but I can help with some information about KFS FENDER bicycles, I was an army brat living at Patrick Henery Village (military housing) Near Heidelberg, Fenders shop was in Swetzengien located near Hockenheim, he sold Peugeot bicycles and parts but his shop also was a hub for local track team Kulp Faltz Swetzengien KFS (Velodrome racing) three of the teams members were on the West German Olympic team in 1972, Kurt and his guys were old back then (1974-1977) when I was hanging out there, I started out racing a Peugeot PY10 and then a Colnago and FENDER build a road racer for me, he saved everyone a lot of money by using all Campy bearing sets and then Dura Ace brakes and cranks etc, My bike is silver and I still own it, It weighs only about 19 lbs and has a short wheelbase which was ideal for the local criteriums run in the town's, I did that and some long road races, most of his frames were track bikes with fixed gears, I had never seen this step through but he did put out quite a few bikes back then. all rare and all hand made, I don't think he had a son but the shop is still there, they Likley kept the name since it was there for so long.
