80's Peugeot Bike

Hello, I was browsing the net for info on my peugeot's worth and came across this forum. I purchased this new in the mid 80's while posted in Germany. This is the original configuration 501, ser# 4545107 gold 58, with michelin hi lite road 700x 20c tires, the gear shifter is partially obliterated but the remaining letters are sim---x. I purchased this bike at the time for 600.00 deutch marks which i believe the then exchange rate would have converted to $300.00 Canadian. Regards, Walter

It appears to be an '86 European PGN10 GS - in Reynolds 501 with SIMPLEX derailleurs.

The PY and PX-prefixed models would be higher in the hierarchy, so I would estimate your would bring about $225-250 (in season), assuming it is in good cosmetic, and ready to ride condition. (If I'm not mistaken, yours would probably be new enough to not have French threaded parts, which is a plus.)

Prices will vary, more or less depending on your market. ( ie, don't try selling it in or around Detroit )

There should be a good number of 80's Peugeot bike fans that would really like this bike as I don't think the "Gold Series" model was ever sold here in the US. I think there might have been a few earlier models done with gold Simplex compnents by Peugeot and a following that deveoped around it, but at least this 80's version might have more reliable, more modern parts. The 501 tubing places the frame smack in the mid level of the Peugeot model line. The Super Vitus tubed models are higher in the Peugeot hiearchy, but the gold colored components on this bike might elevate it's price to the right bidder as something closer to what a Super Vitus framed (PSV) bikes might be at, so I think that $300 might be a possibility at the right place, right time and right buyer for a bike in close to perfect condition

My German's very poor, but that catalog appears to indicate a limited production of 20,000,000. Seems like they've added too many zeros. That bicycle would have been worth a lot more than $300 CDN circa 1985/1986. CDN MSLP for a PGN10 was about $500.

Peugeot had made 20 million bicycles from 1903? up to 1986 and for that event they make a special edition.

Thanks for the replies and history on the bike-its interesting info. As for what I paid for it, that was some 25 years ago and I could have easily made an error. It was about 600. in some currency. W
