1984 (?) Specialized Stumpjumper
Picked this up at the local thrift store. Tried to do some Google research and the best guess I have is that it's from 1984 and not 82.
Anybody have an idea as to how much this thing is worth? It looks to be in great shape for its age with all the original components.

OMG a pristine early Stumpjumper! Forget any estimates that point out its a rigid fork MTB and sells for $100. THis is a pristine early Stumpy. They have a sort of cult following. I would estimate at least $200. Depending on where you live, this is one of the few vintage bikes that might be better off being sold on ebay. It's hard to say. You do need to find the exact year of the bike and determine if it was the first year they made Stumpys. If it is, hold on to it. Geez I wish I could find one that nice at a yard sale.

Wow, that's clean. 1984 sounds about right and if you could find someone who is looking for vintage Stumpjumpers this one would be worth a pretty penny. If you don't have an interest in it and just want to sell it, I'd put it up on fleabay with a buy-it-now price of $500 or best offer. You might find someone willing to pay that or if not you can find out what the market will bear.
That's a very solid bike in fantastic condition but most of the value is in the nostalgia of the thing.

Yep, looks like deraillers, bar and stem and brake levers should narrow it down assuming they're all original.
You got the Tomaselli brake levers and specialized bars, so that leaves a few options open. Filling in some blanks should help zero in on it.

That's a great bike! Original mountain bike history. Back in the day I had an 83 and and 84 stumpjumper, based on the Araya rims, I'd say you have an 83. The 84 had Saturae rims. The handelbars on both those years models were the bullmoose bars, but I heard that Specialized would substitute components depending on what was available. That might be the reason yours has the slingshot stem set up. I bought a mint condition 1985 Stumpjumper last spring, and it had the slingshot stem set up. I was able to get a Specialized bullmoose bar to replace it. If I didn't already have my 85 SJ and your bike was a larger frame, I'd buy it from you for sure! I'd pay $500 for it too.

Depending on your location you may be able to get good money without going through ebay. But then again you you have alot of money already so what difference does it make if you give it away for next to nothing on CraigsList and then that buyers sells it on ebay.
