1980 Schwinn Super Sport

I bought a 1980 Schwinn Super Sport a while back -

It has a pretty good Panasonic frame with some good components on it - including 2 terribly mismatched 700c wheels that the PO installed.

I plan to sell it, but I have no idea what wheels came on it back in 1980.
Right now it has one "Gentleman" Wolber rim with a no-name 7-speed Cassette/sealed bearing 126mm hub at the rear, paired with a Mavic "deep V" 700 and Shimano hub up front.

I am trying to figure out what to do:

1) Sell it with these fairly decent quality but ridiculously mismatched wheels
2) Try to source a 700c wheel that matches one or the other
3) Install a lightly used 27" Araya alloy 126mm wheel set that I have kicking around, since that is what it probably came with anyway (or did it?)

Any advice is appreciated.

Sure it is not a 1981? The 1981 came with 700c wheels. If you have a matching set of 27s in hand, I would be tempted to use them, as long as you are looking to sell the bike to a recreational rider. Higher end pricing would be best suited with the 700s.

Bill -
The 4-digit code stamped in the head badge begins with a Zero, so that pretty well pegs it to 1980.
Given that it is a 1980, are you saying the 1981 was the 1st year for 700c's ? If so I'll install 27's and be done with it.

I don't believe there was a 1980 model year Super Sport, and as Bill says the '81 came with UKAI alloy 700c rims.

What's the serial number and the head badge date code?

The first three digits are the day of the year, and the fourth digit is the last digit of the year. What's the fourth digit?

Thanks Scooper -
I guess I got the date code reversed - the last digit is "4" so for sure it came with UKai 700s.

I'll create a search for the Wolber/Mavic wheels on eBay and run it for a week - if nothing turns up CHEAP, I'll discount the bike and go with the 27's.

PS - If it my own bike, I would choose the 27"s over the equivalent 700s all day long!

Last digit is a four? That makes it a 1984 model.

No Super Sport in 1980.

The 1984 Super Sport is a pretty nice bike, I would be looking for a deal on some 700s, donor bike, or post a WTB in your local C/L bicycles for sale section.

It is a nice bike with very good components right down to the pedals. - Unfortunately finding 700s cheaply is not so easy because too many people have an aversion to 27's.
If I don't get lucky with the wheels I might just upgrade the tires to some 27" Paselas. They will make any rider forget all about the 700s. -It looks like I have room but I'll double check to ensure they fit.
