Help with a DeRosa

5 Attachment(s)
Hey everybody,
I'm new here and I'll be posting an intro in that forum soon.

Meantime, my DeRosa.

What do you think? I'm not sure the year. It has the Super Prestige sticker on the top tube. It is not in the greatest shape, dings and such, chrome is peeling here and there. Modolo brakes, Mavic wheels, Campy Record drivetrain, Cinelli neck and bars. I think it is all original save the specialized bottle cage, tires and bar tape.

-D.

Welcome.

I think you have a challenging and interesting "project bike" on your hands.

Tell us a little about the dings, rust, and fit.

Does the bike fit you with the seat in that position?

There are three spots where the paint is chipped off, all the way to the steel. Two of them can be seen in this photo.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=209924

The rest is mostly surface rust except the top of the forks.
The plating is coming off, you can see in this photo

I've got somewhat short legs for my height and a long torso.
I do ride it occasionally and that is the setup that is most comfortable to me.
She is big, too big for me honestly. Not sure the frame size or how to measure.

tugrul 07-09-11 07:38 PM

Funny, I have the legs for that but not the torso.

Early Trek catalogs have my favorite diagram for measuring (A is seat tube center to center, D is top tube center to center).

http://vintage-trek.com/images/trek/Trek1pg3.gif

Some measure the seat tube to the top of the top tube (center to top).

Thanks Tugrul, that is a great drawing. Very helpful.
I just ran out to the garage and measured:
Top tube is 57mm or 23.5"
Seat tube is 63.5 mm or 25"

So would that be a 23.5 inch frame or a 25"?

norskagent 07-09-11 07:58 PM

you may have the inches right, but not the mm's. Frame should be measured in cm's, and top tube and seat tube should be close to the same, unless it's a custom build.

longbeachgary 07-09-11 08:02 PM

The bike looks big but not as big as a 63cm - looks more like a 60 maybe 61cm.

joe englert 07-09-11 08:03 PM

the model is a professional. the super prestige is just an eddy merckx thing that he won. it has nothing to do with the model of the bike. that same sticker is on other bikes as well depending on who won that in a particular year. i think moser has one on his bikes as well. its a great bike by the way.

Oops, yeah 63.5 CM not mm.
measurements are center to center

I'm pretty sure my measurements are correct, maybe it is custom.

tugrul 07-09-11 08:23 PM

63.5x57?

Maybe I have the torso for that bike... with a less ambitious stem.

The "size" is typically the seat tube measurement, but since everybody measures it a bit differently, it's just best to specify as you have.

tugrul 07-09-11 08:25 PM

That rust isn't a big deal.

I can't think of a good reference thread on touching up the minor stuff and then preserving the finish.

destil 07-09-11 08:45 PM

Anybody got any resources to find out the age and if it is a professional bike?

This is the "What's it worth" forum, so anyone care to take a stab at its value?

joe englert 07-10-11 01:47 PM

i will make a guesstimate.....the sr group is worth around 500.00 alone. id say the bike, as it is now, would be around 750.00. i had a mint frame and fork i sold for 500.00 but it took a while and mine was mint. yours, in the condition it is in would be worth half of that...maybe more...so id say 750.00. but then again, what do i know? good luck at any rate.

destil 07-11-11 01:34 PM

Thanks, Joe.

I don't really want to sell it, my wife thinks it needs to go (for space reasons she says since we recently both got new bikes).
I picked it up several years ago for $300.:) I'd love to restore it but I'm afraid I don't poses the skills or resources to do it justice, so it sits there, so wifey says, "it is just sitting there, why don't you get rid of it?"

But I don't wanna...

Grand Bois 07-12-11 11:57 AM

Please raise the seat a bit since you don't ride it anyway. It looks ridiculous like that and any De Rosa deserves better.

jet sanchEz 07-12-11 12:24 PM

If you want to make the most money on it, part it out. The frame/fork will net you about $400 because of the condition and you can probably get another $400 for the parts. Is the stem pantographed? If so, that alone will net you an easy $100.

Good luck, keep us posted. There is a C&V Classifieds section for which you will likely find a lot of interested parties in this bike.

bobbycorno 07-12-11 05:53 PM

WAY too big for ya. I'm sure I could find a way to dispose of it... ;-)

What part of NJ are you in? You can store it at my place! :) I want a chance to experience the De Rosa mystique.

Seriously, I have some tools and some know-how, so if you need any help with anything, or want to break it down for easier storage, or want to tune it up a bit, let me know.

We just had a Professional for sale in Minneapolis.

It likely sold at a price near Joe's estimate.

With an Athena gruppo.

Jet's idea makes the most sense to me, unless an interested party steps up.

Wouldn't be the first time around here.

Aaron had a white Professional not so long ago that I wanted in the worst way, and I almost pm'd him on several occasions to buy the bike. :)

I'm down in Burlington Co.

Hrm, those panto'd parts change the game a bit. You might want to keep everything together as the yellow in the pantos is intended to match the yellow details on the frame. Take some really nice and clear and crisp photos of the bike set up against a white garage door or white wall in bright sunshine and I think you can get $1000 for the complete bike.

Parting out will require more work but the post and the stem will probably each go for about $100 depending on their condition. You might even want to do a combo auction and have them both in the same auction and throw in the bars and put a BIN for $250 and it might work. The frame/fork will go pretty easy at $400 or so and then maybe put the other parts (derailleurs, brakes, brake levers) up with a BIN of $200 and then the crank and pedals maybe a BIN of $150 and then you are left with the wheels, maybe a quick $125 BIN. Maybe my prices are a bit optimistic but others will chime in with an opinion or two I am sure.

Such a nice bike, maybe you could try trading the frame/fork for a similar De Rosa in your size?

maym036 07-13-11 05:18 AM

I think the seatpost and stem would bring at least 300 dollars alone on the bay

Oh well, no De Rosa mystique for me then. There are a few other BF members in South Jersey who may be willing to lend a hand.

I think you might be right, they are both in excellent condition.

I'll shine it up and send you the rag when I'm done. This way you can rub Essence of De Rosa on whatever you want ;)
