90's? Peugeot

Hi everybody and what a wonderful website this is! I could spend days just browsing from one topic into another...

I bought a classic racer, a very light silver/pearl white Peugeot. I think it is from 1990 as on the hubs (Mallard) it has 03 90. From the research I have done so far that should be the third week of 1990, am I right? It has 10 speed, non-aero brakes, still Rigida Super Chromix wheels and plastic downtube friction shifters, which make me belive it is a low end bike. Simplex derailleurs, 700x23 tyres. It wobbles when I brake, wheels need truing, but otherwise rides very well. The rear brake cable runs through the top tube, which I like a lot, nice touch. It hasn't got any stickers on the frame except PEUGEOT on the downtube and "Made in France" on the top tube. On the BB it has Y002 20306. Can any of you knoledgeable people out there tell what model/year this bike may be? I like it a lot, but is it worth spending on new alloy wheels, saddle, etc? I paid £50~$80 for it (idiot? hope not).

I can't see the picture (I'm behind a firewall), but since you are giving the price in pounds, I assume you probably have a european model. The expertise here on Peugeots tends to be US centric (but some do know the european models).

In my opinion, almost any ridable bike is worth $80, so I don't think you paid too much... I have no idea whether or not you got a hot deal though.

For $80.00 you did just fine assuming the bicycle is in reasonably good shape. You can more accurately determine the vintage of your bicycle by reading and applying some of the information contained in How Old Is My Bike?

Based on the brief description, my guess would be a lower end model but it will still be a nice riding bicycle. You can learn how to determine a good bicycle from a lesser one by studying Bicycle Quality, a feature article intending to help sort out the good from the not so good.

Hope this is a help.

Thank you for your help. I took some fresh photos and you will notice I have been busy lately, a lot of ebaying and other local online listings.

You were absolutely right, it depends what did you buy the bike for. This is my first road bike, and I wanted to experiment with a slimmer bike for some time when I stumble on this advert. I loved it and I am having loads of fun upgrading it. Nice excuse for spending some time away from the wife The bike has now new saddle, pedals, bar tape, cables and alloy wheels (all from ebay for less than 100 $). The wheels came with a 6 speed freewheel. The ride is now a real pleasure, so fast and smooth. The freewheel has a funny configuration though, 13/18 and it kills my legs uphill. It wheighs just over 11kg/24.5 pounds.
The decals turned brown from the sun I guess and I think it might have been re sprayed at some point and whoever did the job didn't put them on properly or they were poor quality. Is this pearl white like a standard colour for Peugeot? And would they stiil use still frames on 1990 hubs? Or I misinterpreted the codes?

Could be a repaint with a newer decal. Those plastic Simplex bits are typically 1970s, decal is a lot newer than that for sure.
+1

Decals say late 80s, the parts say late 70s.

In any case, it's a decent low-end Peugeot. Nothing special, but should be a good rider. 24.5lbs is not bad at all for a starter road bike. Many junky old road bikes are well over 30, some even topping 40. I wouldn't bother sticking any more money into it though. You've probably already gone over the re-sale value with the $100 in parts you've spent so far.

Yes, the frame looks like it could be from the late 80's/very early 90's but it looks like most of the components were sourced from an older bike (Owner could have done a switcheroo before putting it on sale). I think that is a cottered steel crankset on that bike, something that was pretty much extinct by the early 80's. Same goes for what looks like a chromed steel seatpost and the headset. The CLB brake calipers could be original to the bike, but not sure about the levers and the handlebar and stem.
The derailleurs look like the last few models that Simplex sold in the 80's . Mostly lower end and built with stamped steel and Delrin plastic, but note that the rear derailleur looks to be ready to fall apart at the upper pivot where the plastic is all sun bleached and dried out. I can even see a crack on the plastic at a limit screw on the upper pivot. I suspect that the front derailleur might have similar issues with cracking plastic.
I'd change both front and rear derailleurs with all aluminum replacements before riding that bike...... The dried out and cracked plastic Simplex derailleurs on the bike are an accident waiting to happen.
50 Pounds still sounds like an OK deal if you do not have to spend too much for replacement derailleurs. Just do not go overboard and buy anything too expensive to replace them. Something like a Suntour VX or a Simplex SX610 rear derailleur with matching fronts will work well on the bike and not cost to much.

Hi Maxtou,

Peugeot Sprint, made in Canada. I don't know for sure but I think the Sprint in Canada was made from 1980 to 1986.

The serial number will tell the year of frame manufacture. The serial number will be on the non-drive side dropout (where the rear wheel axle is bolted on) or on the upper seat tube also non-dive side.
