1951 Raleigh Sport - Is this a good bike, how much is it worth?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi folks, I'm looking for a vintage English 3 speed bike and I found a '51 Raleigh Sport. Is this a good bike ? The condition is OK in my opinion (picture attached). The seller says he rides it currently. Thoughts and comments will be greatly appreciate and what would be a fair price? Thanks. Also, I'm 6 ft tall and the bike is 21", do you think it will fit, I have a Centurion Elite RS that is 23", but since this is not a road bike, it may fit me.

If you're into 3 speeds, that is a pretty sweet bike. Full chaincase, dynamo front hub and light. Very cool. Looks like it's in decent shape overall.
As far as fit, you'll have to try it and see if it's comfortable. You may feel a little cramped. For value it depends a lot on your market. Here in NYC these are very popular and it could go for something like $250 or maybe more if it's in great shape. Depending on the popularity near you, I'd think you're looking at somewhat less than that. |
Thank you lostarchitect, I have a vintage road bike and started getting more interested in 3-speed, to have it as an extra bicycle to ride around the neighborhood, around town. I'll probably check the fit first. THANK YOU.

I have sold two similar bicycles, and both for more that $400 each plus close to $200 each for shipping. Both bikes were step through models and both were in very nice shape...

Hello Randyjawa, what size were yours (21 or 23") and do you have any experience with fit on the Raleighs? Any feedback will be really appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks. I will go see the bike this week and check if I fit. Let's see. Very excited here, I hope it fits me!

The seller is asking $150.00 and I will offer $125.00, I got a feeling that he will not sell for less. My biggest worry is whether I will fit on it. He is saying that he is 6' tall and that he is confortable with the set-up in the picture, which I don't think it looks bad. Once again, comments will be appreciated.

OK...did you buy it???

Hey randyjawa, do those rod brakes actually work? Just curious what kind of stopping power they provided, and why they're no longer used. They've always been a bit of a curiosity for me.

Unfortunately I did not, I realize that I really need a 23", it was too small, it can work but I decide to wait for a larger frame. Beautiful bike though. I will be patient. I'm 6' tall but have long legs and long arms, my inseam is 33.5".

I would be interested if it is still for sale. Can you pm me info? Thanks
Never mind ... Found the add... |
Whether or not it's a good bike depends on what you intend to use it for. If you want an image/style statement, it's a nice bike. It's probably fine for tooling around town, except that the steel rims won't stop well in the rain. It's weight will make it difficult to move aorund the house/apartment/steps. Pretty much any 80s decent MTB is a better all around bike for most people, but they aren't as "cool" and they won't have fenders. How useful fenders are for a bike with steel rims is a different issue.
A 21 inch would be tight for me, and I'm a shade under 5'10. Fair price is hard to determine because I'd need more photos, but typically $150 or less is about right for a Raleigh Sports if it has the original lights and generator working. If it has the Brooks in decent shape, go up $50. Without the lights, $100 is probably high'ish. He's probably on the high side of fair in my neighborhood. |
Welll I was planning on buying/picking up this bike tomorrow...the seller called today and said the original owner decided he wanted to buy it back. Bummer...I have always wanted and older (50's) Raleigh Sport or Superbe ...well I'll keep looking.
