1987 Bridgestone Gran Velo 3000

I''m the original owner & had this bike for 25 years. It is all stock with Sun Tour Superbe Pro components except the brake levers are Dura-Ace. I believe this is a Grant Peterson frame. I've been told this is somewhat of a "cult" bike. Here is a link. it is in very good condition & has maybe 1,000-2,000 miles on it.

Need pictures of the actual bike for a couple of reasons. First, it is all about condition. Secondly, there are wide swings on bicycle values, and the presentation of the bike goes a long way towards the ultimate value.

Heres the hard truth Bridestone is a midicore import brand for most of us. Yet this is a great bike and you should keep it If you sell you will regret it.

I did a quick 15 min wipedown so it hasn't been totally cleaned, etc. Mostly just got off the dust. Please give me some feedback. I won't regret selling it, but want to ask a fair price to someone who has been looking for one of these. Thanks!

Depends on where you are located, and your marketing skills. $350 +/-.. WRONG.

+1 To JR59 comment at the end: $350 is way too low.

Given a closer look at the pics and components, I am thinking north of $500. To get higher values, unless you are in a red hot market, it is hard to sell a vintage bike for $500 plus locally. So you are probably talking ebay. To the right bidders, and well presented, it could go pretty high on ebay. Ebay is a bit of a crap shoot.

I bought a bike a month ago solely to snag the Superbe Pro RD and shift levers, and I bought another bike solely for the Superbe Pro hub/wheelset. I am a big fan of the Superbe stuff.

Unfortunately, a part out would probably yield the most $$. I like that Superbe headset, is that a Superbe Pro crankset (they go well).

Any idea on what this is worth? If I hang onto it, do these go up in value? How does the Grand Velo compare to a RB-1? Based on the pictures, how would you rate the condition?

Figured it would be a 56 +/- judging from the headtube. I'm in North California as well. Any way for me to contact you?

One tape measure trumps 10 internet guesses. The pump mounted level to the top tube hurts my ability to estimate via a photo. Could be a little larger than 56cm. Bike did not come in 56cm, its too big for a 55cm, so its either the 57 or a 60.

As far as whether they are going up, yes, right now the nicer Japanese bikes from the 1980s are going up. Will they continue? Who knows. Collectibles come and go, the onslaught of cheap bikes from China continues, etc.

Condition is very good at least. Superbe Pro stuff will continue to go up IMHO. The higher end Suntour components are just starting to be appreciated. I would predict significant increases in the future, for the highest end, cleanest components.

Looking at your pictures, complete with original pump, in excellent condition, all Superbe Pro, I would bump my estimate up. Someone is going to want this bike.

+1 Below, Superbe Pro group alone is over $300.

Sounds like I should put it for sale on the markerplace here, or on EBay. Thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty sure it must be a 57. A 60 is too big for me. I rode this about 50 miles a week for a summer or to back when I got it. Maybe rode it 5 times in the past 25 years.

Looks like a full Suntour Superbe Pro group (including wheels), this has to be worth $300 by itself.

Yes, it is full Sun Tour Superbe Pro. I measured it & it is a 57 cm frame. So, with this group, frame in great condition, with the original pump, seat, etc. do you think an EBay auction with a minimum bid of $500 is reasonable?

If you have spotless feedback and the ability and skill to ship and pack for a reasonable price, then yes. If you don't have a lot of experience selling on ebay, do a google search on posting full sized pics, and peruse some of the successful completed auctions for marketing tips. There is tremendous variance in prices achieved on ebay, often the same exact model bike can go for half or less than another auction due to poor marketing.

Clarify the size if you do put it up for sale, 57cm can be either center-to-center or center-to-top. Better yet put both sizing methods together, that way a potential buyer will know based upon how the buyer usually measures a frame. And include the top tube length, center to center, because for some of us that is just as important as the seat tube length. Also the stem length is nice to know as well.

For pictures be sure to take one without the frame pump on there, and put the bike in front of a neutral color background. With the white tubing a white garage door won't work well, find a gray or light blue door in the neighborhood.

Is that typical for that rear derailleur to not show any lettering on it? To me it would look like any lettering is worn off thereby lowering the value. If that's how it is supposed to be then state so in your text in as few words as possible.

Are you certain the pump is original to the bike as a manufacturer option, or is it something you bought at the same time as the bike. If an accessory then show one pic with the frame pump on the bike, and all the rest of the bike pics without the pump.

Bridgestones are worth something to those who know the marque, but to those who don't then it's just another Huffy. We here know better, those elsewhere may not. If you can confirm it is a Grant designed bike then include that in your text for those people who seek out his designed bikes and use his name in their searches. If you can't confirm that then leave his name out completely.

Just my opinions for whatever small amount they are worth.

ps, also verify your chain length, it either looks a bit short to me, or you've got it cross-chained a bit, at least for how I like my bikes set up.

The derailleur does say superbe pro but it in in a light gold on the silver body & does not show up very well with the camera/light I had when I took the pictures. It is very subtle.

The pump is stock, and came with the bike. You can see it on the sales brochure picture.

It is 57cm from the center of the crank to the top of the seat stay. Which I think is the accurate measurement that is standard.

Not sure what you mean on the chain. All I know is I've never messed with it, so it rode fine & is stock.

I will work on getting some better pictures with a different background in daylight verses in my garage at night. From what I've read, it is a Grant Peterson design. He left Bridgestone a few years later when they stopped building bikes.

Chain looks fine, although you have it cross chained right now. If you want top dollar, you will shift it so it is no longer cross chained, and clean it so it sparkles. Dirty = instant discount.

With a little time on clean up and ad preparation, this bike could go high. Every time I look at the pics, I like it more!
