Check out my mint Aero i bought in 1982 for $2000.Original pyramid rims with flat spokes and first tubulars with full tread as its only been ridden for 10 hours.Needs cleaning but has no scratches anywhere,Full Dura Ace groupo ,plus i have 2 seat posts ,original saddle ,mint and extra front shifters.This thing is mint,rides awsome ,no ticks or clicks it just shifts and then silence.Lots of looks when this is on the road which hasnt been for 10 years.

Now that that's out of the way...

It would help to see some better pictures of the bike with the wheels on and with it cleaned up. It looks very very cool and never ridden but unridden and mint are not the same thing. Are those tubulars dry rotted? Difficult to tell from the picture. Also, the 30 year old grease in the hubs, bottom bracket, and headset, and pedal bearings should be replaced before this bike is ridden or the bearings will be destroyed.


As a rough guess, with the full Dura Ace AX group I would probably not sell it for less than $1000.

What is the frame material? Seatpost diameter?

I'm not sure I can speculate on value. I'm really not an expert by any stretch (and I have no idea what Dura-Ace AX stuff goes for, though I'm sure it's a lot), and I've never seen one of these for sale complete - though I do have a 1981 'Imperial' frameset with exactly the same paint, decals, and fork. Mine is a Tange Champion #2 frame with vertical dropouts (Shimano). Tange 1C fork, I believe, as stamped on the steerer if you can still make it out under the silver/grey paint (almost certainly the same as yours).

Unfortunately, mine lost it's components along the way (save for a DA BB and the original Kuwahara headset).

The frame is Tange Aero Dynamics CR-MO P.G. the tubes are all oval so i dont think they;re like yours.The headset is sealed and is as good as the day i bought it ,the bottom bracket is fine and has been repacked by me a few times .Will be done again as im now tearing it down to clean it up.only bearing issue is the peddles which im not sure how to repack but i will figure it out.Tires are good and if you dont know get better with age if they;re good tubulars and arent dryed out which these arent.Frame and parts are virtually without any kind of marks or scratches it is all original,bought from RussHay in Victoria and it is as mint as they get ,you wont see another like this anywhere,and its mine all mine ha ha ha ha cant find my damned chain link remover or bottom bracket tools ?

Hm. Definitely different - I noticed the brake cable routing through the top tube, but didn't realize the tubes were ovalized. I have never heard of the Tange Aero Dynamics tubeset. Interesting. Fork may still be the same (Tange 1C) or not; the chromed shoulders and profile are extremely similar (mine also has chromed ends). And mine was also all Dura-Ace when built, I think (with the definite exception of the headset). One of the fellows at the Bike Dr in Vancouver had one (an 'Imperial', that is) in the 80s, as did a friend of one Forum member who looked at pics of my frame. I wonder if the silver/grey paint scheme (which, along with almost all decals, is identical) was typical for their high-end bikes in the early 80s? Anyways, this one is something unusual.

Again, I won't speculate on value - the ovalized tubes make it even harder, as I've literally never seen one of these - but you seem pretty pleased to have sole possession of this relatively unique bike, so what does it matter, eh?

Parts are worth more than the complete bike in this case. Apollo does not get much response from the market. Several of the Japanese manufacturers made Aero bikes during that era, hence the whole DA AX and 600 AX product lines. DA AX bits should bring really good $$ if you sell internationally.

+1 I define mint a little differently. Obviously in very nice shape. Headset is 30 years old, that means its not as good as the day it was made. Grease, dirt, oxidation, all have their toll, even when a bike has been nicely maintained like this one. Aero bikes are unusual, but not rare. I guess it depends on what you call rare. I have seen many aero bikes over the years, but I look for bikes every day.

Can you provide a link to a source where 30 year old tubulars are better than new ones? I have a pile of old tubulars, and could use that for my marketing.

These headsets are a little different as they are sealed,as long as it works perfectly then there is no problem. ya the tires are Wolber neo-pro and seem to be fine ,this was always inside and babied ,we will see how they hold up,seems the age thing is only good with silk track tubulars(my bad) but these seem fine so im good.This bike has basically been an orniment in my house and really not ridden much thats why its in such incredible shape,amazing bike to ride not a tick or click ,its silent.its staying as it is accept ill repack the peddles and BB and retape,cables are perfect original brake pads have no wear and seem fine.

Just watch those tubulars closely, I had a set of older used ones that I thought were fine but after a short time being aired up they started breaking threads in the sidewalls.

I also ran in to nearly the same issue with a set of older NOS tubulars that looked great but after being aired up overnight (on rims of course) to stretch them before mounting they started cracking.

I apologize if my original post was out of line, but I see virtually every listing on craigslist as "mint condition" and it's become a pet peeve. Should've just asked for better pictures rather than judging on the small ones posted.

Really depends how they were stored IME. I've seen tires crack and go bad in less than 10 years. On the other hand I have a pair of Matrix tires I pulled off a Trek from the mid '80s that are still in great shape. Probably my favorite pair of tires right now (they are clinchers BTW.)

ya sorry i snapped at you it just seems people want to bring out the negative when i feel so positive about this bike and the great shape its in after all these years,its not perfect but its damn close.Is there another in this shape ? i really doubt it,i wonder how many were made? and as for the tires if there is anything wrong with them ill get new ones ,do they still make Clements 240's? wonder if Araya still exists as these are some nice pyramid rims they made,although dont fall into the flat spokes as they;ll cut your fingers right off.

I watched a far nicer, cleaner Lotus sell on the bay for $650. An Araya sold for 500. I'll place yours at $500-600, minus fees, on eBay if you are polite to buyers, provide good photos and write realistic ad copy.

Haha - you have a who cares frame with parts that have some value only because no one bought them. It's a 500 - 600 bike when it's sold by a decent seller. You'll suffer a 20% doofus discount. I wouldn't bother with such mediocre rides myself.
