Mid 80's trek
I found a steel frame trek with shimano 600 6207 cranks and front mech, 6208 rear mech and cassette, Camp Record hubs and mavic 40 rims. It is a green/white fade. I would love to know the year and model but have been unsuccesfull in finding a readable serial # or even finding the components or color scheme in Trek catalogs. The 6 spd sis leads me to believe its from 86 but what model? Why Camp hubs? Also the green is very 86, 87 its like a seafoam green. Thanks for any help

Ignore the components, unless you know they are original. Most of my bikes do not have original components. Active bike owners like to upgrade wheels/components/whatever. Best shot of dating is any part you think is original: seat post and stem are the two I check first.
In particular, SIS is a common upgrade. I have picked up several bikes from the mid 1980s where the owners upgraded them to SIS in the late 1980s. |
google for old trek catalogs and see if you can find it from there.

They have all the catalogs plus a serial number database. The serial # should be on there somewhere, although it may be buried under something or difficult to read. If you post pictures of the frame we could also probably help identify, at least the approximate year it was made. |
Does a magnet stick to it? If not, I'm gonna wild-guess 1988 Trek 1000.
Got pics? Doh! Just saw the steel bit. Hmmm. And fade you say? Hmmnm. Got pics? |
I would say an '87 560 Pro, if it's Aqua with white decals.

Lets try some pics

Trek decal is 88-95 style. Clamp on shifter bosses seem odd, most post 86 Treks I've seen had brazed on bosses. Looks like a Kelly Green in pics.
What does the decal on the seattube say? |
So close to a 1988 400 (if it's kinda off-white) but the seatcluster's wrong.
Do the seatstay caps say "Trek" on them? |
Decal may be non original.

Decals likely from this Velocal set: http://www.velocals.com/media/01/a20...39f9a6f2_m.jpg |
The sticker on the seat tube is a license from 1988 maybe 87. The seat stays do have trek stamped in.

Based on the "Trek" on the seat stays and the clamp-on shifters, this is probably an older Trek. Early 80s maybe. |
Repaint with the wrong decals. Serial number is a must. Otherwise, it could be anything.

I am pretty sure the serial number is under the cable guide on the bottom of the bottom bracket, I just cant read all the numbers. It ends in 47. There is no head badge so maybe a repaint. It has braze on for a rear rack, seems odd
|
Need more pics: of rear dropouts, bottom bracket, and seat cluster if possible. Agree with FastJake, looks early 80s to me. Fork is pre-unicrown......seatstay caps/terminal ends at seat cluster junction will have 'Trek' molded in (just saw where you mentioned this). Definitely 1984 or earlier model.

I know this is an old thread but I have some more info. I brought the bike to get powder coated and when the guy stripped it he got the serial number.
045147 According to the data base that makes it a 21 inch 610 made in 1983. If that is right than I assume it is an 84' 610 but the rear rack mounts still seem odd. Does anyone else have one of these? Does it have rack mounts? They certainly could have been added during the repaint. They are just threaded barrels, brazed on top of the seat stays. I can't take a pic because its at the powder coater. |
