1980 Raleigh Super Grand Prix - How much should I offer?

I really like this bike, but I'm not sure if $300 is a fair price. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks!

$300 is way too much. All original means the bike will need new tires, tubes, cables and completely serviced. If you have to pay a shop to do the work, wouldn't be worth it if the bike were free.

A 21.5 inch frame would generally be suitable for someone smaller than 6 feet tall... a 54cm frame falls within my ideal sizing and I am five foot 9.5 and have a 33 inch riding inseam.

The SGP is a nice enough bicycle with some decent Raleigh branded Suntour, Sakae, and DiaCompe (or Weinmann) brakes and levers but it is not $300.00 nice... if it has received a service inspection from the original dealer that is a step many sellers would not do.

Last one of these I bought was $80.00 and it was a 9/10 and that was some years ago... one has to note that the wheel sets on these are extremely lightweight and would not be suitable for anyone over 160 pounds unless they were re-laced with stronger spokes as they used a very light gauge single butted spoke on a very lightweight rim.

I have been running a set of these wheels that I pulled from that 80.00 SGP for many years... the frame was too big for me and my friend wanted the bike but at 265 pounds he would have taco'd the wheels in no time flat so I sourced better wheels and he rode the bike a great deal without any issues.

Thanks for the tips about the tires! I never would have known.

Replace hope with knowledge. Spend some time studying up, its all on the web, or run a major risk of getting screwed.

I own one and love it but it's not anything spectacular, I should also mention that it's NOT a Chrome moly frame. As for the wheels, mine only had an original front but it held up to my 220 pounds just fine until I got hit by a car.

In freshly serviced, ready to ride condition I'd say it's worth around $200.00 give or take depending on the market.

It is a nice bike and the one you are looking at is a pretty stellar example... but the price is just a wee bit high for what it is.

Frame is high tensile steel and it probably curbs out at 28 pounds, will offer a wonderful ride, and they look sharp.

This is a much better buy in a similar size.

The bike is nice but the price is just to high for what it is. If you where going to use as daily rider it likely needs tires, cables, bar tape, brake pads, chain and likely wheelset & freewheel. Which is pretty typical of the bikes from this era seen on CL. Also I'm not a big fan of the Wieman brakes with turkey levers. Because of the original condition and the barends I would consider maybe $150 if you can do all the work yourself and source parts fairly cheaply.

I have a '79 Grand Prix. Not the Super Grand Prix but the components are identical. The only real difference I see here between mine and this SGP are the Barcon shifters where mine has the SunTour ratcheting stem shifters. Those hubs are likely Normandy and the rims look just like my Rigida steel rims. I have the same freewheel and could pull a stump out of the ground with the low end gears. Those bikes are a nice smooth ride. The front forks have a certain amount of "give" in them that makes them just glide over the tarmac. I don't think it's worth $300. It does have horizontal dropouts which make it desirable for converting to a fixie and that might be worth a premium in some markets.
