I have an Italvega Super Special that I bought new in 1972. I'm hoping to get a rough idea what I could sell it for.

It has pretty much all the original Campagnolo Record/Nuovo Record parts. The only departures from the original bike are the rims (now has Mavic CX18), the seat, the seat tube the cluster and possibly the chain. The bike was repainted by CycArt about 20 years ago, which did a really good job. Cyclart replicated all the original decals. All that's missing is the Columbus tubing sticker. Scratches to the paint are quite minimal.

It has been ridden lightly over the years and has always been well cared for. No accidents ever, no frame damage.

It was recently tuned and cleaned. It is ready to be ridden.

Frame has Columbus double-butted tubing (according to articles I've read).
Drops are Campy.
Slight different than original Campy Record brakes were added in 1973/74.
Mavic CX18 rims are tubular.
Frame size is 58 cm (according to mfr.).

What kind of tubing might this bike have? tubing material pays a big part on the value of the bike. Good thing is, the bike does seem to have most of its original 72 NR/Record components except for the brake calipers which are slightly later CPSC era ones with the spoon shaped quick release levers and the plastic covered wheel guides. Re-paint quality looks good (and have some expected chips and scratches that a bike used on the road should have), but for some reason, the bright red color and graphics looks to be what you'll find on an 80's bike. Was that the original color and graphics on the bike that Cycleart put on?

What a beauty. I'd love to find out what everyone says about it. If you're local, I'd love to get this bike from you -- I'm on the hunt for one to ride. Say, what size is this frame?

- According to this and this the frame has Columbus double butted tubing, and I can confirm that it has campy drops.
- Yes, the frame was repainted in the late 80s or early 90s (I forget exactly when), which explains the different look. Cyclart was able to replicate all of the original decals, although in actuality, they are painted on.
- I added the campy brake calipers in the mid-70s. Originally, I couldn't afford the full price of the bike, so I asked the dealer to substitute Mavic brakes to save cost. I regretted the decision and bought the Campy brakes maybe one or two years later.
-Frame size is 58 cm.

FWIW, I bought the bike from Charlie Harding of Westwood Cyclery.

Q: does the substitution of CX18s affect value?

I think it will, as the older the classic bike is, the more originality buyers of this vintage of a bike will tend to look for. A set of polished, clear anodized, silver Super Champions, Nisis, Ambrosios or Fiammes will look more appropriate on the 72 bike than those dark anodized ones. I'm going through the same problem with a 72 build myself. The last owner put on a set of 80's vintage, dark anodized Mavic MA40s on the bike that just does not look right. Problem now is trying to find any of the rims I mentioned for an affordable price....

What kind of dropouts does it have? As it sits not knowing the tubing I would offer $400 for it. OH those are tubular wheels right?

I think this is a handsome bike, Columbus SL or SP tubing. Now the bad news. Originally it was metallic brown and had chrome lugs, graphics were gold with black keyline. Most of these also had half chrome forks and stays. So to some, even if it is better looking today, it is less valuable. One reason is why was the chrome ditched? Brakes are from the late 70's at the earliest, they are post CPSC "test" modification. The rims as mentioned earlier are a negative to some for the same reason, but are upmarket rims. The bike images pretty well, to maximize its value, look at those images closely and clean up the rust on the chromed bits, they are not in line with the rest of the bike.

Also, Cyclart probably charged dearly for their efforts, some nicks and scratches but not very many. Paint is still glowing. Problem is Cyclart has a variable reputation, some will steer clear of a bike repainted by them. I would discount it heavily. Ouch.

Unfortunately this bike also to me falls in the category of worth more a la carte than whole. $500. as a bike. Probably shocking and not in a good way, only hope would be two bidders who saw a turnkey rider. Then, and only then, $700.

Very good. As stated the bike shows well, it is more attractive than it was in its original colors and presents well. You I think were fortunate to locate a buyer who valued what it is now.

Robert, do you still have the pictures you previously posted for your Italvega Super Speciale? Your old dropbox link is dead. I'm doing research on Italvega and would appreciate any before or after repaint pictures that you had/have. Do you recall what color it was before you had it painted?

If you bought in 72 at Hardings, were you going to UCLA at the time? I was there from 73-77. Thanks for the reply and any information you could provide.

When you write you were there from 73-77 are you referring to Hardings or UCLA?

Bought me first "tenspeed" from Hardings in 65 and was at UCLA 64-68. Mondo piccolo!

Hi Juvela, I was at UCLA from 73 to 77, curiously I never even knew about Hardings' shop or visited. When you were at UCLA, I was just a wee lad in S. Central LA, then Inglewood, riding a Schwinn Stingray and getting my pant leg caught in the chainring a lot.
