How much for a 1963 Peugeot PX-8?
 

I've been looking at a 1963 Peugeot PX-8 as a keeper, not a flipper. The bike is a touch on the small side for me, normally I ride a 59 and this is a 57. The rear Soubitez lens is broken and I can't find any info on $$ to replace.

The seller seems to be playing with the price because it's currently on eBay for $600 with a $100 discount for local pickup (which I can do, no problem). The bike was also on Craig's List for $550. Given that, I figured the real price was $500 and I was comfortable around $425 - $450. All of a sudden, now that I've expressed an interest in the bike, the C/L price is $625. So, two questions...

1) Instinct says walk away because of the size and the price issues. Lack of experience makes me ask: What is the bike worth? Am I too low; the seller too high?

2) The bike is currently set up with original drops. I've seen pics on the 'tubes, though, with this bike set up in a porteur style. Given that what I'd really like is a Hufnagel porteur, but don't have the extra $6600 lying around to drop on that, would it be a crime against humanity to convert this bike over to a porteur?

While I am by no means an expert on 1960's French bikes, FWIW, I recently acquired a pristine mid 1960's Peugeot Mixte with fenders and chaingard for substantially less via ebay, including shipping from Chicago to Ann Arbor.

+1 Price is total dreamland. If you are interested in that particular bike, you are going to have to wait awhile for that seller to sober up, or find another one.

Some people think the bike they have is off the charts valuable. Bringing them down to earth is often impossible, but time helps.

And every once in a while, they hook a sucker.

I see your point. I finally found two sale records within the last year: a pristine '73 for $310 and a gorgeous '68 for $375.

Seller is fixed on getting the new full price of $625 so it's time to move on.

Seller justifies asking for $625 even though sales prices are around $320-$375 because those prices don't include shipping. "It would end up costing you $600 by the time you had it shipped."

No, you see, when a buyer pays shipping, you, the seller, then have to actually use those funds to pay to ship the item...you don't get to keep shipping charges as some sort of magic windfall.

I'm also pretty sure it doesn't cost $250 to ship a bike.

$60 to $80 shipping cost within the continental US, depending on bike frame size.

Time to walk away. Neat bike, not worth dealing with the owner.
