Need help identifying vintage Grandis bike.

Hello,

I recently acquired this older Grandis frame and fork. I am hoping someone here might be able to help identify the year and model of it.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forums. I'm not an expert on Grandis but short dropouts would normally put it into the 1980s. The fact that it does not have a pump peg would typically limit it to no later than mid-1980s. The fact that the dropouts are not Campagnolo would normally indicate at mid-range model, yet it has very nice workmanship. While the fork is out, check the steerer for a stamped Columbus logo and check inside the steerer's bottom for five spiral ridges indicative of Columbus SL or better. Since there's no bottom bracket installed you might as well also check for similar spiral ridges inside the bottom of the down tube, seat tube and chainstays, that would indicate Columbus SLX/SPX. I doubt you'll find them, as these frames typically sported dual bottle mounts and front derialleur tabs. The ridges are quite small (3.5mm wide by 0.3mm thick) and can sometimes be hard to see, so use a strong light or feel for them. I'm attaching a picture for reference. Also, determine the seat post size/inner diameter of the seat tube. This detective work should allow us to determine the tubing and therefore the level of the frame.

Thank you. I appreciate your insight, there are no spiral ridges inside the tubes nor is there any stamped Columbus logo. I am thinking it could be a 70's bike but just not sure.

I agree with T-Mar I think mid '80s because of the short drops, under the BB cable routing and recessed brake mounting. There are a few Grandis fans on here give them some time to reply. They may not have a model but may be able narrow down the year is there any kind of serial number?

No, I don't think it is 1970s. Campagnolo introduced their short dropout in late 1978, for the 1979 model year. Other Italian manufacturers tended to follow Campagnolo's lead, so this would almost certainly put it into the 1980s.

I not surprised that are no spiral ridges in the frame but I am a bit surprised at the fork, given the level of workmanship the photos indicate. Most likely, it is either tretubi Columbus SL (SL only in the main tubes), or Columbus Matrix (similar to SL but cheaper seamed tubiung). It could also be lesser Columbus plain gauge set like Aelle but this is less likely and can be determined via the seat post size. Least likely would be another high grade tubeset, such as Reynolds, as I don't recall Grandis with anything but Columbus.

No serial numbers. Only 56 stamped on forms and bottom bracket.
