Old Peugeot

I recently sold a Peugeot U08 that I picked up and shouldn't have because it was too big.

To replace it I found an old Peugeot off of Craigslist, guy said I could take it out of his garage for $40, and I couldn't refuse. Around here people get silly with pricing on bikes, so it was refreshing to get something for less than $50.

Now, from what I see I think it's a 1970's era UO8

I have built a fixie which I didn't like and a single speed which I really enjoyed riding but was too big. After riding a friends single speed, I decided I wanted another one. So, I was planning to turn this one into a single speed for casual riding when I just need to go to the store, or ride around the the neighborhood or as a backup to ride to work.

Before I do this, I wanted to make sure it wasn't something that wasn't special or particularly worth anything or keeping as original as possible.

I couldn't find any markings after taking a look at it, but the brochure pages suggest it is a UO8 or AO8 from the 70's.

It has simplex components, and looks like some one sharpied around the frame lugs.

I've attached some pictures, hopefully some one can confirm my findings that it isn't anything special.

It's in pretty rough shape, the rear derailleur has broken teeth, front one doesn't really work. It has QR 700x25C wheels, which I thought was interesting for a bike that age.

Any idea's on if it is a U or A08 would be appreciated.

Is there a sticker identifying the frame material? If it says Carbolite you can go ahead and single speed it with a clear conscience.

Not that I can find. It says the english equivalent of Special Peugeot Tubing on downtube. Has the pump brazings on the bottom tube.

Has the chrome forks but not chainstays.

For your purposes to single speed convert, whether an A or U doesn't make a difference. Carbolite appeared on early 80's bikes, which your bike precedes.

Most assuredly, not a high level Peugeot. Enjoy and good luck with the conversion.

Thats for all the help guys!

Trying to identify the year, and to tell if it has the silly french bottom bracket.

To me it looks like a 1970, or 1971 except in white as seen here:https://mysite.verizon.net/imagelib/s...O-8%20&%20UO18 or https://mysite.verizon.net/imagelib/s...-8%20&%20UO-18

Well, a bit relieved that it's not something special that I'd have to spend money on or try and find some one else to restore it. Took a loss of $25 for the shimano freewheel on the last single speed that was too big and sold it for what I paid for it. This one, would probably make a few dollars, but I want to keep it as each time I get rid of one, I feel like I need another.

It has cottered cranks, early 70's, it is a French BB. Not until early 80's were they changed.

Yes, it has a french bottom bracket. Its a 1970s UO8, there are millions of them out there. Don't worry about the exact year.

Because of their use of crappy plastic derailleurs that have a tendency to disintegrate, I think they make a fine SS choice.

I've got a white one myself awaiting this conversion. Mine came with upgraded 1980s Suntour derailleurs, that I needed for another project. Only negative I see is that only the small chain ring can be tossed (I plan to reuse the crankset). I bought it for the Suntour parts and a few odds and ends, that have moved on.

That is exactly what was wrong with my first one, front derailleur was "missing". I'm surprised that this one is working and the rear is the one with the issues. If I find a working rear derailleur in my parts bin, I might ride it around as a 10 speed until the front one explodes.
