54cm 1982 Miyata 912 - lightly used, all original parts, down to the water bottle.
I've been looking for a new like and found a 54cm Miyata 912 on craigslist and bought it.
Now that I've got home I'm almost hesitant to use it as my daily commuter. It's all original parts - the leather on the toe clips is still good, the teeth on the original crankset are still sharp, it still has the original water bottle even. it also comes with italian leather cycling shoes but I think they were bought separately.
the only issues that I can see is that there is a little rust underneath the cabling on the top tube, and a few paint wrinkles from those rust spots. the rubber on the brake hoods is gone and needs to be replaced, and the bar tape - which is a strange but rather nice cloth material- is faded. also the logo lettering on the downtube is slightly faded.
so - before I convert this pretty frame into my daily commuter, thought I'd ask what this was worth to someone else and whether anyone values the all original look.
from the catalog, the bike and specs:

How about some pictures of the bike? It's a great bike; I'd ride it a commuter, a rider, or whatever.

Personally, I would leave it as original as possible , save any parts you change out . If you get time , post some photos of the bike , sounds like a nice one .

There's something odd about the RD adjustment; it doesn't look right. Gum rubber hoods don't last; there are replacements that can work: https://www.amazon.com/Cane-Creek-144...ds=brake+hoods. I'd deal with the rust straight away by sanding it out and painting it over. If you google around there are plenty of threads on this topic and black is an easy color to match.
I really like the bike and I'd just ride it. Miyatas are great bikes.

I've been riding a miyata 721 which just died and am so pleased to have found another to ride. I must say the 912 is a small 54cm compared to the 721, but as long as the short tt doesn't start to cramp i will keep it.

You need to deal with that rust. Endless threads on that topic, hundreds at least. Gum hoods are toast, that's common. Either buy some of the Cane Creek replacements, or use this as an opportunity to install aerolevers instead.
Chain appears to be way too long, would be better to see the drive side from crankset to RD to make a better judgment. Some just use the entire length of chain out of the box, rather than properly adjusting it (shortening it) a la the Sheldon Brown method.

You showed the catalog for 1982, but I think yours may be a few years older. The decals, lug striping, clamp-on shifters and "backwards" brake cables look just like those originally on my '79, but the lug shapes and fork crown are slightly different. Is there a decal with "Miyata 912" on the drive-side CS? No matter what, it is a cool, great riding bike. Im really enjoying mine as recently upgraded with 8-spd Campy brifters. Wish I'd kept that beautiful crankset. I used gold Jagwire wire cable housings on that recent rebuild, and like how they accentuate the head badge, lug pinstriping and decals.
Just about any newer brake levers will be more comfortable than those early Shimanos, even if the hoods were pristine. And dual pivot calipers with Kool Stop pads are a huge improvement, too.
Could you provide a photo of the tubing sticker? Mine wore off when I used a frame pump under the TT years ago, and I'd like to see what it says.
