Peugeot Track Frame - please help
Hello,
I am looking to make use of an old velodrome I found in the poorer suburbs of Johannesburg, to start track racing on weekends. At first I thought I would never find an old track frame that I could use, because in South Africa even the fixie craze hasn't really taken off like it has in the rest of the world, so they are not easy to find. I didn't want to use a conversion bike on the track, and I was afraid I would have to buy a new one or spend my weekends renting the track bikes at the velodrome.
I was browsing the classifieds when I came across an ad saying "Fixie Bike". Reluctantly, I clicked it, expecting another (terribly done) conversion from a cheap old steel road frame.
I was pleasantly surprised to come across this yellow Peugeot with track dropouts. I have never seen this before and I would really like some information on it. It is going for $97 Dollars - converted from the Rand.
I can see that the components are not original, which is a pity. At worst, it is a $100 track frame which I can use to start out in the velodrome and work on returning to its former glory if I end up enjoying it.
My question is, is this really a Peugeot track frame? Would it have been possible for someone to just get a regular Peugeot road frame and cut-out and replace the dropouts? Or perhaps it is another brand, and they guy just put Peugeot decals on for god knows what reason.
I have asked him for more info (if he can find it) on the tubing and the serial number. I appreciate any input from someone who knows about Peugeot's track history, if any.

Haha great, thanks for that link oddjob2! Will be really helpful for me. I will get my brother to pick it up for me before someone else grabs it. The seller is in Cape Town unfortunately.

You can check the dropouts, but it looks legit to me. A great deal at $100! I would love to find one of those here.
I don't know what the rules at your track are, but if they allow converted road bikes nothing wrong with using one of those either. All my fixed gears have been converted roadies, but then I don't do any track racing.

Yes, after some research and seeing how rare these are, I thought it was too good to be true! I am not sure they have any rules as such, but I feel better racing track on a bike made for it. The Geometry on this one seems legit, so perhaps I am very lucky and this guy has no idea that his bike is rare.
I feel lucky.

My concern is the forks are an obvious colour mismatch and may be a replacement due to a crash. This frame should be carefully checked out for damage to the top and down tubes in the vicinity behind the head lugs.

You have a point mparker326.
T-Mar, thanks for the advice. It's a pity I can't get it myself, because I would check thoroughly for any damage. I will brief the person who will pick it up for me and hope that their judgement is sound.

Very interesting read, thanks for the link Oddjob2. According to one of the contributors to the thread, Peugeot didn't make track bikes themselves, but sourced them from other builders and finished them off with their marque.
You may never definitely identify the maker, but I would buy it as whatever it is it is certainly worth a hundy. That is barring any significant damage.
