cehowardGS, I guess it depends on how badly you want it. The 2.8 was a major improvement over the 3.0 and the basis of the early CAAD designs.

FWIW, I had a 1995 R500 (2.8) I flipped and it went locally for $325, it was in great shape and very original. The RSX components were certainly not at 600 level though.

$450 if you want it. Even $500 really.

I can and have sold older Cannondales with DT shifters for $325, just sold one last week. Tricolor STI is sweet, really sweet. As a keeper, I would have no problems paying $450 for it. That might sound high, but you have a lot of bike there. And upgrading a Cannondale to tricolor STI would cost you A LOT more.

My two favorite STI groups are 6400 and 7400 (Dura Ace). The tricolor STI has the advantage that it works with any Shimano indexed RD, whereas the 7400 STI requires a 7400 DA RD. So really, the 6400 series is a better option.

First, thanks to all for the informative replies.. Where I stand with this. It looked like a winner, although I need another bike like I need a hole in my head. I got two projects going on now, and a promise to my wife no more bikes except one special one that I have been hunting for.. Now, this comes along..It looks to be in prime condition, my size, and already sporting good components.

I asked the seller are they open for offers? The reply was "what you thinking"..

Being a senior citizen and all, I offered $300, if I didn't have as many bikes as I do, I might could go higher but since I am filled up, with stuff that I like, I need to hold off.. If they accept the $300, I will be on it..

Again, thanks for the great feedback on this..

Offer more if your budget allows. Group and wheels, depending on condition, are worth $400+. Condition looks quite nice! Cable work needs some tidying up.

I could go up to $400 on it easy, I had an R900 just like that with tri-color, but mine was in much worse shape and didn't have the original STI. Still sold it for $300.

Well, the good news is, the seller didn't get back to me.., From the info that I gathered here, and I really don't need another bike, but I would have gone to the $400 mark on this.. Someone mentioned that the group and the wheels are worth $400 and the bike looks spotless too..

Most likely the seller didn't like the $300 offer, that was about 40% off of what the seller was asking of $500.

I couldn't get another bike in my sig anyway.. not enough room.

When I get a 40% off offer by email = instant delete.

I consider email offers to be a total waste of time as a seller. At most, they only commit the seller, as the buyer does not have to come through with the money. In person, in cash.

Okay, how was I supposed to go after it? It is not a "got to have bike" wasn't what I was looking for either..It just happens to be a super sweet bike, in my style and size..

Take me to school..

1) I'd have called the guy up, confirmed the size and any other immediate details not apparent in the pictures, and set a time to come by and see the bike that evening.
2) I'd arrive 5 minutes early with $400 in one pocket and two fifties in the other. And a helmet for the test ride.
3) If the bike looks as good as in the pictures and rides well I'd do the old 'you're asking $500, I have a $400 bike budget, would you take that right now in cash' scenario.
4) If he accepts or offers to meet me halfway, I've just saved somewhere between $50 and $100.
5) If he holds tight to $500, I pay and go on my way happy. Because...
6) I wouldn't go see the bike in the first place unless I had the money to spend, was ready to take it home with me tonight, and was willing to pay that for a pristine example.

I'm looking at this bike too, but have not decided how badly I want it.

What make the 2.8 better than a 3.0? (Except for 0.2 pounds)

Also any opinion of the “cantilever" rear drop-out? I understand the point was to allow easy replacement?

Thanks in advance.

Well said!

And if it is an obvious smokin' hot deal, don't ask any questions, just get in the car and drive. I bought one recently, where I was the second responder. Responder #1 asked a bunch of questions: can you measure this? and this? Can you send me a pic of this? And that?. My response was simple. "I would like to buy your bike and am available now". Guess who got the call? Bike was selling for 10% to 15% of its value.

Don't be so hard on yourself. If you really wanted it, you'd have driven over there and bought it. The fact that you didn't just proves that it was an 'interest' and not a 'desire'.

13 Bikes isn't lucky, you *need* this one, plus you don't have a 2.8 Cannondale in your stable do you?

And it is your size...

Man, I love spending other people's money! It's all good.

Cannondale changed the tubing shape, diameter and thickness. TT is butted and ovalized, the down tube is a conical shape that's butted and larger at the BB and ovalized at the TT. The -.2 lbs. is a moot point, except for marketing.

I had a 2.8 and a CAAD3 together for several years and there was no difference in ease of rear wheel R&R nor in ride. The CAAD3 is the same as the 2.8 except for longer, non cantilevered seat stays. In the second year of the cantilevered drop outs a replaceable RD hanger was used if that is what you're referring to.

Two interesting points are that the nude Cannondales (like the BLs) were a bit rare in my area and during this era an Ultegra (600) bike was Ultegra for all major parts (same for other levels).

And BTW, the seller must be reading this thread, I got no answer to my offer, and they raised the price to $600...

LOL, then you don't have to worry about me asking you to be a facilitator on this. I would have gone $400 on it, probably, if I saw it in the flesh. Do me a favor, and DON'T bump this thread when he relists it for $450 a month from now
