I'm pretty sure they are but I was going to just put the money into it just as my first restoration. And my gf wants a decent bike to ride around town.

I have a Nishiki Custom Sport from the early 80's. It has a nice chromo frame and a nice Sugino GS crankset. It also had alloy wheels, but they were trashed. The cranks and frame were worth (to me) what I paid.

Can you post some pics...........it would really help in determining if it's worth rebuilding/upgrading.

May be depends on the market. Properly built vintage conversion on nice cromoly frame still brings top dollar in Toronto. You have to try one of retrospec/purefix/whateverelsejunkbrand to see clear difference. All cheap internet brand fixies have the cheapest crap components, no prep work whatsoever, etc. I assembled several of them for friends last year and all had issues.
Plus all internet brand cheap FG/SS look bland and same and where is the fun of doing first conversion yourself?

At least in US you guys have bikesdirect which makes OK first FG/SS (shipping to Canada is expensive and while you can ship to warehouse just across the border - downtown crowd usually carless and want their bike now)
