Opinions Wanted-1977 Schwinn Superior

1977 Schwinn Superior in said to be exceptional condition. Asking $560.00. Owner has posted bike on CL several times at different prices since around 2011. Obviously priced too high, but what value would you put on a black Superior in cherry condition?

I would think right around $500 in current condition so the seller isn't far off. Yet at this price in many markets it could sit a long time at the $400 price range it would move fairly quickly.

I would have to see many more close-up pics before paying that high of a price. I'd also want pictures of the serial number and headbadge number to verify the frame and bike build dates. For a high price originality is king and from the one non-drive side pic I can see it is missing the dust cap on the Nervar crankset, the 5.75" chrome spoke protector, plus the Weinmann gum hoods and plastic barrel adjusters look trashed. Fortunately those do turn up on eBay. The original Matex saddle looks to be damaged and originals in good condition are virtually impossible to find. Most of the time they get replaced by a Brooks. I can't tell if the original Atom 440 pedals are present, but if they are the original bolt-on reflectors and toe clips/straps are missing. Finally this is a 26" frame and Schwinn used a 3.5" long-reach "S" stem on 24" and larger bikes while this one looks to have the 2.75" shorter reach version, it kind of looks awkward. Bottom line: Too many missing, damaged or incorrect original parts for a price that high, I'd go $250 to $350 max. for that one.

Thanks all. I might be interested if the price was much lower but I wouldn't want to insult the seller. The local bike co-op had a green one in decent shape for $400 and even that is outside my bike budget right now. Need to sell some.

the atom 440's are present.

question for the schwinn experts: iirc the relaunch for this version of the superior was 1976. is that correct?

many others have commented on this before me, but why does it seem that most sellers provide only a non-drive photo of the machine on offer? even random chance would give 50% of the time a drive side photo. ;^\

The last of the fillet-brazed Superiors were built from '76 through '78. Note that many used reworked leftover '72-'75 Sports Tourer frames. Plus they didn't use them in any order, for example I've seen '78 Superiors with '72 frames. This leads to confusing listings like this '77 Superior on eBay (incorrectly listed as a '73): 1973 Schwinn Superior | eBay

awesome. I restored one years ago that I told a kid to buy off Craiglist for 90.00 from a japanese guy. Turned out the seatpost was stuck, hence the markdown. I freed it. (not fun).

Definitely not a weight-weenie bike, but man what a cadillac. I think 500 is do-able with the right criteria. Okay ...400.00. Fine . But you won't miss the hundred dollar difference years from now. You don't see these often.
