Worth of this Atala 1972?
 

HI all, just curious what this bike is realistically worth our of curiosity sake. I will be restoring it as a family hand-down but just wanted to know.

Also, any detail regarding the history, parts, original colour, etc. would be fantastic.

Looks to be a quality bike. Has a few details typical of better than average bikes, including downtube shifters and chrome lugs.

We need more and better pictures. Components might help identify the model. That means good pics of the derailers and cranks at a minimum.

Why are you asking about original color? It doesn't appear to have been repainted. Are you just looking for a color name?

BTW, it looks in great shape from what I can tell. Bar tape is likely original and looks hardly worn.

As above, looks like a higher end Atala, and good components for the time, and the chromed stays are promising.

It looks to me like that is an Atala Gran Prix with the cottered crank replaced--someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like stamped drops, pushrod campy FD, steel seat pin, etc). Atala had some higher end bikes with Columbus tubing, but this one was hi-tensile. The good thing about them was they had Campagnolo Nuovo Tipo hubs, which are attractive, and Fiamme alloy rims. The chrome headlugs are attractive, too. They were made to appeal to someone who wanted a flashy Italian bike but didn't have the budget. Regarding original color, I have seen them in gray, yellow and white, but they may have come in other colors.

As far as what it is worth, well, that depends a lot on the condition and where you are. I can buy these for $150 or so in OK condition in NYC, maybe $200 if it's in nice shape. I had one and it was an OK riding bike, but nothing to write home about.

My first 10spd was an Atala 104 Grand Prix, with a black frame that looked a lot like this one. This was a mid-range bike that compete with the likes of the Peugot UO8; roughly $150 price. Straight guage tubing, stamped dropouts, but yes.... chrome head tube lugs, forks, and stays. Yours looks like the crankset has been replaced with a more modern alloy cotterless design (originally steel cottered crank), and perhaps new stem (and handlebar?) and new tape. Otherwise, I think rest of components may be original (and not terribly great). Decent wheels: Campy Tipo laced to an alloy rim (Fiamme Yellow?) -- probably best part of the original bike. Your rear derailler looks to be a better Campy than the Valentino on my bike; what does your front DR look like?

Yep, after seeing those added pictures, I am 99% sure it is a Grand Prix. Someone upgraded the cottered crank and the RD was replaced with a later Gran Sport--both good upgrades. A big chunk of the value is in the hubs, they may be worth almost as much as the whole bike.

I would say about $250+300 depending on market a lot of the value is in the parts. As said the upgrades don't hurt value on this one they actually help some value wise.
