This morning my girlfriend and I went to the local used bike guy to find some decent/cool old bikes for riding around town.

We both have trek 520 touring bikes we bought for a cross country trip last summer but want some bikes that are fun for around town and we wont be worried as much about locking up downtown while we're out and about.

So we found a Fuji Monterey that my girlfriend loves with cool fenders and a back rack which is nice.
I found a fuji sports 10, both seem to be from the 80s or 90s if i had to guess but i dont know much

They are both lightly used and garaged and in good shape. He wanted 225 for the sports 10 which sounded way too high but we ended up deciding that if he were to clean them up and we liked them upon test rides that we would give him 370 for the pair.

This amount was pretty arbitrary which is my concern because as I understand neither model (esp the sports 10) were that high end and I have no idea if this is a fair deal or not.

I dont have a picture of either unfortunately, but just wanted to get a perspective on whether this is an obvious rip off or if this makes sense, perhaps I havent provided enough info for you guys to determine that but was just hoping to get an idea.

Just going from pictures turned up by a google search (which isn't gonna be super reliable, because things always changed year to year...)

Both bikes look to have steel rims, stem shifters, claw-mount derailleurs, and brake extension levers. All of those are signs of a low-end bike, especially the steel rims. The Sports 10 I found pictures of has a steel cottered crankset. The only way I could see paying anywhere CLOSE to 370 for the pair of them would be if they each had brand new tires, new inner tubes, new chains, new handlebar wrap, new brake pads, and new cables, and if he could prove to you that all bearings have been recently serviced with fresh grease. If they aren't in that sort of immaculate fully-redone condition, then you'd be getting horrendously ripped off. In my market, near one of the largest college campuses in the country, I'd expect $100-125 out of each of those bikes after a full rebuild with all new consumable parts.

okay i had no idea there were any pictures taken while we were there, but here is a pic that my gf took which shows the bikes, not the best pic cause she was just taking a shot to post to instagram or whatever..

Looking through some old catalogs, and taking into account the colors of the bikes (which varied from year to year) it appears that the Monterey is either a 1980 or a 1981, and the Sports 10 was made somewhere between 1977 and 1979. They both have very similar (sometimes identical) components, and one disappears right about the same time that the other appears. They're both marketed as basic entry level bikes, and I suspect it was more or less just a name change between the two.

They're both heavy bikes (~31 pounds), with steel rims, and made of hi-ten steel. Nothing to write home about, unless they just strike your fancy in some intangible way. Unless you're somewhere that has an insanely expensive bicycle market (Hawaii?), they're way overpriced. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is a very hot bicycle market, and I'd be surprised those would fetch much more than $100/ea. here *if* cleaned up and ready to roll.

they'd be worth the price you mentioned in the op only if fully overhauled (all bearing components are rebuilt) and with all new disposables (cables, tape, etc.). this is the way i sell my bikes which fetch that kind of price.

even if fully overhauled and with brand new consummables, $185 per bike is very steep in my opinion. very very steep.

Steel rims. Tires look shot on both of them. The yellow one has no handlebar wrap, and the brake levers are mounted way lower than they should be. Looks like no work was done at all to them. If I saw these at a garage sale or something and was buying them to fix up and sell, I'd go 10 or 15 bucks each on them. I think I'd probably pass if they were $20. You can find way better for almost $200 a piece.

I'd wager that the Bay Area's bike market is much hotter than Hawaii's. Supply is low there, but so is demand.
