Nishiki Rally 49cm

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the bike world and looking to invest in my first road bike, something cheap.

I found this and since I know nothing, I'm wondering if it's a good price/good investment.

Thanks.

Nishiki Rally 49cm road bike

EDIT: i have been informed this bike is not a good deal. I looked up a couple other my size on CL, wondering whats the best deal. Thanks a lot for helping out a newbie.

Lower end bike, tires look old. Way too much money. Have to give credit to the seller, he knows how to polish a turd.

Thanks for the heads up. I would not have been able to known it was a lower end bike otherwise.

I edited my original post with some other bikes my size I found on CL, wondering if I can borrow your expertise once again on what's worth what.

Thanks.

The Peugeot might be alright if you're looking for basic transportation, it's hard to tell for sure from that picture. The others are beyond my limited knowledge.

You need to educate yourself to avoid overpaying. This is a good site to start.

If the Nishiki is in good shape, don't dismiss it. I had 3 or 4 wise men on this list advise me NOT to purchase an '80 Nishiki basket case for $60 bucks. I ignored them, I bought the bike, I put another few hundred dollars into it in paint, cables an FD and such. . . . and it is today my favorite bike by far, including my carbon bike.

Listen to your gut. It's rarely wrong. These old Nishikis with their long top tubes can be made to fit a range of humans. Their frames, spindles, head set etc. are quality. Which is why the bike you're looking at is still around. If you buy it and have an inkling to fix it yourself, you'll have plenty of support here. That support outweighs the advice of trolls. :-) IMO.

Go here for my experience. It was GREAT! :-) Check out all the naysayers on the first page, then go to the last page and check out the final product. This was, like, the most fun I've ever had.

looks like you did an awesome job. thanks for the alternative perspective. unfortunately, being a beginner, redoing a bike is much out of my skillset. and fortunately for you you found your nishiki for only $60, whereas the one i found on craigslist was asking $260, which, based on what people have told me here/random googling, is far too much for the bike.

Perhaps. Certainly if you purchased it, you'd want the bearings re-packed (minimum). If all else is good, you'll have a $300 bike that is far and away superior to ANYthing coming out of Wallymart these days. Nishiki made good bikes with Suntour components, the best at that time. If it's a bike you'll ride and enjoy for years, it is well worth the price. Good luck in your search. DB
