Fair Value for Trek 728?
A friend is going to sell me his 1982 728 and we are trying to establish a fair value for it. 22.5", mostly original I think (although I have not actually examined the bike yet). The '82 is the version with centerpull brakes and 700c, not the later canti/27". Only one photo, sorry. The pictured Brooks saddle is not included.
I've searched through previous posts and read the results. Interested in current opinions. Again, this is between friends, so we are looking for the price that is a fair value for both parties.

Those look like cant's to me. Looks well thought out and taken care of. Barcons are a plus/plastic pedals tho-and without the saddle I'm thinking in the 250 range. Don't know the market in Idaho. I like it. Make sure it fits however. Treks are popular for quality.

If I could buy this for $250 I will take a dozen please. I have had several Trek 720 series go through my hands and didn't keep any since loaded touring is not my thing but I did enjoy test riding them. I can't say if the canti equipped bike would being more $$ but the 728 I had worked just fine with side pulls and the brake calipers sure are pretty. I hear Gran Compe centerpulls are a desirable item.
The 728 I had was missing the seat tube decal and had a Stronglight crank set for some reason but was very clean. It had Suzue hubs but with Super Champion rims which are not spec in the catalog. 22" frame and sold on local CL in SoCal fairly quickly for $450 in November 2009. I USED to keep very good records. I think your friends bike may be a rung up the ladder from what I sold. You can do the search on ebay and see what a like new 1985 canti version sold for, yikes.
It was a very pretty bike. BTW I now have an '81 716 and love, love, love it. Best of luck and enjoy it. The 728 I sold:

Still learning
+ Barcons, rear rack, luggage, computer (minor benefit), Panaracers in good condition, good paint, triple crank useful in Idaho.
- Crappy MTB pedals, low end Huret derailleur(?), probably original shifter cables.
FMV = $300 +/- 10%

incazzare.
That bike is in great shape, has high quality tires (Jack Browns, not Paselas), and is a Trek from (IMO) one of their best years. Downsides are crappy pedals and no saddle? Slap a decent looking but cheap saddle on there and I'm pretty confident I could get $400+ for it in NYC.

Having an 82 728, I watched them sell on ebay from $300 for ones in ok shape and original ones in very good condition sell $700+-. Seems like $400-500+-is pretty typical for ones in good shape with original or quality parts.

This is a quality vintage touring bike with good components and in fine cosmetic shape. The bike is worth between $400 to $500.

I'll echo the $400ish folks. That's a nice looking bike based on that 1 picture. I'd like to see some close ups, if possible.
I just looked at vintagetrek.com and I'm not sure if that crankset is original. Catalog says a Sugino AT (which I have on a 82 Trek 614) and from this vantage point your crankset doesn't look to be that. Then again you may not care.

OK thanks all for the advice. We decided on a $400+ish price (partial trade).
The bike came out of Scott's father's estate and was purchased new in 1982 for around $800. Scott would've kept it but size is incorrect for him.
I have the bike now and am pretty happy with it. Seems mostly original. Cranks are AT, barcons of course, front der. is a replacement, rear Huret, brakes are (sweet!) Gran Compe, bars/stem Cinelli, seatpost Superbe, headset Tange, wheelset Rigida on Suzue, Jack Browns, Blackburn rack. Pictured saddle is one I threw on but original is coming.

I just built up a 1982 that I picked up on CL; sweet bike. I ended up not using the dia compe brakes as it turns out that finding replacement pads is no easy thing (but you can use mafac holders and pads).
