I just got back from looking at the bike. Fantastic ride as you would expect from Tange Prestige but the brifters are done. The right side works sort of if you play around with it, a lot. Left side will shift up to the big CR but not back and it wasn't the shifter cable. I was very bummed since the seller told me the shifters worked. My idea of WORKING shifters and his differ. I was not going to take the chance of resurrecting them with WD-40 treatment.

The rear wheel is original with a 600 hub, front is a no name brand hub and rim. i probably would have bought it anyway if it fit but I wanted all the 600 bits, especially the 8 speed STI. Oh well. Cable guides on top tube are a little rusty as well.

If you had a rear brake caliper and some DT shifters laying around it would still be a sweet bike for an end user. You could use the brifters just for brakes I suppose. The guy had a few callers while I was there.

Wow - that was an absolute steal for 135. I am sure the brifters could have been fixed with a good dousing of wd40 and they alone are worth the asking price. That bike here in MPLS would have sold instantly.

Thanks Chad - if you come across anyone looking to sell a Team Trionfo between 2004-2007, I'd be interested. Most interested in the frame, thx!

Zombie, RISE!

TLDR: Got the same bike with some issues. Have a few questions.

1. Do you think pulling stickers off this bike might hurt the paint? Unsure, never pulled logos off before.
2. Do you think a shimano 600 8 speed crank will work with 105 5700 10 speed group
3. Having never done a full tear down/rebuild/modernization project and with limited tools/experience, how far in over my head am I?

FULL VERSION

I just purchased the EXACT same model and year as the OP did back in 2010.

The good:

Frame is in excellent shape. No signifigant scratches or dings anywhere. Tange Prestige with good lugs. No rust at all.

Groupset is complete, and the crank is in stunning shape. Looks almost new, completely mirror shiny. 8 speed 600 series, complete including brakes.

Frame is my size

The GREAT:

I paid all of 25 bucks. Guy knew what he had, but didn't have the time to work on it, saw it was going to a good home and let it go for next to nothing.

The bad:

No saddle.
No Pedals.
Brifters are non functional. They move, but the right shifter doesn't click (but it does move the cable a little) and the left shifter clicks but no cable movement at all. The wheels suck, and the rear is badly out of true. Seat post is not original and while it works fine, its this weird matte gray color.

I have never had a project this big. I've done a couple partial teardowns that have involved little drivetrain work (just derailleur adjustments, never pulled a crank, changed a BB, installed a derailleur, pulled a headset.) I don't have the tools to do so, or a workstand. I have allen keys, a cassette removal tool, a pedal wrench, chain whip, and chain removal tool. No crank puller, bb tool, or headset puller.

My plan for the bike is to completely tear it down, as the BB and headset obviously need new grease, and the shifters have to come off to see if I can get them working again. The cables have to go (housing has seen better days and they are clearly in need of replacement) and I've never run cables or installed housing before.

I think the Novara labels are stickers on top of the original white paint. I may try and remove them if you guys think it wouldn't damage the original paint (don't want to get it coated or resprayed, keeping cost down.)

I have a partial 105 5700 groupset in good working condition. I was thinking I would pull off the full 600 groupset, try and recondition the shifters and sell it as a full set, and put the 105s on. That is, unless I can keep the 600 8 speed crank with the 10 speed 105 group. The crank is freeking beautiful. I still need to pull it and check/replace the BB either way though. If I CANT use that crank, I have to buy a new one, as the one I have is for a BB30 and this bike looks to be BSA. You guys think I can use the 8 speed crank with the 10 speed group? I have found conflicting data elsewhere.

I am picking up an inexpensive set of Shimano RS10 10 speed wheels to put on replacing the original Araya box rims.

So, finished product would be all white with a few blue accents and very few labels/stickers, blue cable housing, black rims and spokes, white and blue saddle, blue bar tape, black hoods, black levers, new black seat post. In my head it looks awesome

And a tangent question, anyone have tips for refurbing shimano 600 shifters? I have heard to soak them in degreaser, dry em, hit em hard with lube, and they might work. I do not want to take them apart. I saw how complex they are, and I doubt my ability to reassemble.
