I just happen to know where a partial Suntour group for that exact bike is. I want to keep it in hopes of that exact frame.

I don't know much about that Schwinn but I almost had a heart attack when I saw that beautiful Trek hanging over a metal bar, then I did notice the rag. Could you post a pic of that rear derailleur on the Schwinn?

Looks like they made pretty neat use of the built-in hanger too, is that a bolted on chain hanger for rear wheel removal?

That's so bizarre. I didn't know that RD or anything like it existed. I wonder how a two-feet-in-the-grave Suntour convinced Schwinn to put an extra braze-on piece on their frames and use that strange RD.

The unusual derailleur, as it was explained to me by the Schwinn sales rep, was intended to eliminate the potential for binding in the arc of cable housing needed for conventional rear derailleurs. At that point in their history, Suntour was desperate to come up with improvements that would overcome the (justified) perception that their Accushift system was inferior to the Shimano Indexing System (S.I.S.). But Shimano's patented floating jockey wheel was an advantage that was impossible to beat.

Just updating this thread. I was looking at a '93 Schwinn criss cross with that unusual Suntour S 1 rear derailleur. I *think* the rear drop out should work fine with a conventional RD but I haven't tried it out.
