FS: '77 Peter Mooney Frameset, 63.5x57.5: $400 Price Drop
Need to make room here in the Bat Cave. Price drop to $400 shipped...
I'm losing my free offsite storage soon, so I need to free up some hooks here at the hacienda. First up, hopefully of interest to C&Vers, is a '77 Peter Mooney road frameset, 63.5x57.5. I'm asking $450 shipped by BikeFlights in the lower 48 states, payment by paypal
"Goods or Services." Two photos attached, more viewable at my flickr page:
https://flic.kr/s/aHsjFj8nwM
Frame dims are:
ST 71.5-deg, HT 73.0-deg
ST 63.5cm c-c
TT: 57.5cm c-c
Chainstay: 41.5cm, wheelbase 100.0cm
BB drop 58mm; standover 87.0cm/34.3"
Rear spacing 120mm
Seatpost: 26.8mm
The serial number as far as I can determine is 044 . Peter's confirmed he built the frame, but said his build sheets showed 044 as a different frame, built in '77. I didn't want to take up any more of his time chasing this down, since the build looks late-'70s to me. So it is a genuine Mooney, but I can't confirm the build date or details.
The frame is very clean, has a CycleArt respray. At least I doubt the finish is original, with proper/thin paint but with decals under clear coat, except for the Reynolds 531 sticker, free to slowly disintegrate. There are some interesting touches, like the very lovely double-
scalloped top-o-seat lug treatment, fastback stay treatment, brake casing guides under the top tube, and an extra derailleur casing guide/loop on the chainstay. Single bottle cage mounts, fder mount (unusual for '77, maybe added when resprayed?), nutted brakes,
vertical Campy rear drops, no eyelets f/r. The paint looks very fresh, hardly any signs of use, just a few tiny chips and a sliver of paint surrounding the binder bolt gone from the right seat lug ear.
It would fit wide tires everywhere but between the chainstays, where there's no dimpling, so there's room for 25-26mm actual width only. If I were keeping it I'd be tempted to have one our talented framebuilding brethren bump the stays a bit. Probably best I sell it before being tempted to go there.
Please drop me a PM if you're interesting. I'm happy to answer questions.

Beautiful frame (thanks for the ping). Not quite the right fit for me. I'm looking for somehting with a slightly longer TT (like 58.5 or 59) and a slightly shorter ST (like 60-62 c-t-c).
Still, it is close enough that I cold make it work and this is sorely tempting....

Wow, that is nice (and my size - though a little short on the top tube). Too bad my bike budget has been spent for the year. Someone's going to get a really nice frame.

I'm thinking a fast forward seatpost, 40mm stem,175mm cranks and a step ladder I might be able to ride it. Beautiful frame.

Thanks to all for the kind thoughts. The first batch o' stuff won't be so hard to let go, since they're all bikes/frames that really don't get ridden much. Not as hard to find new homes for things that don't actually get used much. And, in the end, I'm always happy to enable others in this obsession, and, ultimately, it's all just stuff...
Meanwhile, TTT!

Mmmmm. Gorgeous! Love that seat lug/chain stay design and workmanship, and the fork crown is elegant. It's my not-so common size - very tall ST, short TT; too bad about the smaller tire limitation, but good of you to make that clear. But I've just thinned my little herd with the departure of the Rambouillet, and need to stay thin for a while. Someone will be very happy with this one.

The Drive Side is Within
Maybe folks know their own size needs best, but even with my 36/37 arms (shirt size), my old 66x58 Panasonic DX2000 had excellent geometry for me. I wouldn't be scared by the proportionately shorter TT size as some posters above are.

Still learning
Wow, and I could just pick it up too. But it would look clunky riding it with pedal blocks.

Somewhere on this site, as we speak, a tall, inexperienced shopper is trying to decide between this frame that he has never heard of and a 25" Schwinn Super Sport on hs local Craigslist....This being Bike Forums, you should see a post titled " Bought A Super Sport, How'd I Do?" in about 20 minutes from now.......
Criminal that this frame has not been purchased buy the appropriate sized rider.

Last bump. I won't be disappointed if I wind up keeping it. I'll have somebody bump the chainstays for me so I can fit some puffy 32s.
