WTB: 6 speed compact/ultra freewheel

Yup, I'm looking for a reasonably priced 6 speed compact/ultra freewheel that will fit a 120mm hub. I already have the wheels, and the frame is so nicely aligned I'd prefer not to mess around with resetting it.

I know it's a long shot, but ideally I'd like to find a standard threading compact freewheel with a big sprocket of 26-28 teeth (I read that an NR rear derailleur should be able to handle 28 teeth if properly set up...).

Let me know if you've got something. I'll probably just order a 5 speed if I don't get any replies in the next week or so. Thanks!

There have been several discussions here about the NR's capacity. I started with a 13-24 FW, then went to a 13-26, then a 14-28. I now run a 14-30 with no problem at all. I tried a 14-32 just for the hell of it, and it shifted it fine as well (This is all with Campy long dropouts and NR 42-52 cranks). Other people have also reported using NR's on big FW's with no issues, so if you need lower gears, give it a try.

^ My experience, too. Currently running 14-30 six speed no probbo with my Pat74 NR RD.

Question: what is meant by ultra/compact freewheel? Is it just a tighter spacing between cogs than, say, a Suntour Perfect?

Ultra, yes. 6 cogs to fit a 120 spread frame. Compact? Thats a front crankset yes? Maybe a freewheel too at some time.

Suntour Ultra had tighter spacing and lower overall stack height of 26.5mm in order to work in a frame with 120mm rear spacing. Here's a link to a Suntour reference chart with all you need to know on the subject. Ultra freewheel is 6 speed on bottom left.

French Atom/Maillard narrow spaced 6 speed freewheels were sometimes labeled compact. I have two.

Thanks, Pastor Bob. I should have guessed from all I've seen you post about freewheel rehab that I could have probably just PM'd you.

Yeah, this is why I didn't just say "ultra" - I think I'd read somewhere that there were other "compact" freewheels like the Atom/Maillard you describe, so that's what I was referring to. Thanks for confirming.

FWIW, Regina also marketed 'Ultra/Compact' 6 cog freewheels. The good Pastor and I conspired to build up one of these over the winter that was EXACTLY what I wanted.

Thanks for the offer, Tgr - is it an Ultra/Compact spaced for 120mm?
