Found a bike in Houston - thanks!

A friend and I are in need of some old steel this summer. We will be living in Houston for a couple of weeks and need transportation. (The reason I included Forth Worth is because I have another friend who will be joining us and lives in FW.)

It's pretty hard to scour CL and find deals in TX while living in Montana (or Canada, as in my friend's case) so I'm hoping there are some people who could help a couple of brothers from the great white north.

We are partial to 1980's steel, the last era of lugs, downtube shifters and our formative decade for riding. I'm 6'2 and currently ride an '88 Specialized Sirrus 60 cm frame (which was restored/upgraded last year thanks to members of this community). Something comparable would be great: Schwinn Paramount, Trek 560, Raleigh Supercourse, Centurion Elite... you get the idea. It has to be rideable as I won't be arriving with my bike stand and tool box in my carry-on luggage.

My friend is 6' and a 58 cm frame guy. He'll be in Houston a bit longer, maybe three weeks. He plans on leaving his bike behind to someone who needs it, he might even sell it back to you cheaper than you sold it.

I would do the same, but if I find something that really needs a good home, I just might put it on a Greyhound back north where it will be well loved in a stable of steel frames.

Here's the kicker: our budget is in the $200-ish range but I think it should be doable. Any more than that and I might as well just ship a bike down and back on the plane.

If your fleet of bikes is outgrowing your spouse's level of tolerance and you want a large bike to go to someone who will love it for what it is (not just hack it up into a fixie or flip it for a quick buck), we are your men. I have contacts in both cities who could accept a bike and make payments. We will arrive mid June.

    Thank you for your consideration,

    David

There is a bike shop in Porter, TX (north of Houston by 25 miles) that has a number of older used bikes. They might be what you want.

I hit ground in Houston on the 17th of June.

Two reasons for looking to buy:
    1) I'm a little nervous shipping my bike two directions - not everyone treats boxes nicely in shipping. However, stories of Greyhound shipping on the forum seem mostly positive.

    2) There are about 100 times more people in Houston alone than where I live in the mountains and consequently more road bikes available (Now if I wanted a mountain bike...)

I've seen some Sprockets bikes on CL, thanks for the contact info. "Now is the time on Sprockets and we dance!"

BTW - my friend in FW is a dyed-in-the-wool UT alum. And did I mention I was born in Richardson north of Dallas?

Big Heineken is THE man. I borrowed a bike from my host down in Houston, got in a wreck, and BH immediately had a bike for me to buy as a replacement. All is well and I got to commute 16 miles round trip each day - I couldn't have asked for more.

Thanks to him and the BF for helping a brother out.
