5-speed Shimano Uniglide(?)

Hi! I'm repairing my bike from 70s. I'm not sure has someone replaced the cassette or wheel. I tried to remove the cassette, which is 5-speed Shimano, Uniglide (UG) I think. Has Shimano made 5-s cassettes on 70s? I firstly thought that it could be removed with two chain whips. But now I think it is freewheel and I need freewheel remover, am I right?

The cassette has these markings: Shimano UG (or can it be VG?) CG.

Shimano *did* make 5-speed Uniglide cassettes, but this isn't one. Just get a freewheel remover and have at it. You'll want to reinstall the axle.

Thanks for reply! I'm not sure about english-terms, but it is a freewheel then. But is it Uniglide, or does that UG/VG mean something else? How I choose the right freewheel remover, or is it somehow "universal"? I was hoping that if it's Uniglide, I could flip the sprockets. But if I have to replace the whole cassette, is it possible to find similar 5-speed cassette?

Joto, welcome to bikeforums.net and C&V.

What we are trying to say is that you have a freewheel and not a cassette. The cogs cannot be removed on a freewheel and flipped as they can be on a UG cassette.

You will need a new 5 speed freewheel and any one that you buy should work as a replacement. For instance this new Shimano Freewheel could replace your old one. Don't worry about whether it is a UG or not. In your case it doesn't matter.

Best of luck on your project.

Is there something wrong with this freewheel? It looks to be only lightly worn, so perhaps will work with brand-new modern chain (8s chain recommended).

Or are you perhaps just repairing a broken axle?

New chain is a mis match on old freewheels . until the chain wears quickly down to be worn and stretched like the Old One.

anyhow the Freewheel remover that you need is the same as the current Shimano Compatible Freewheels use ,

though the makers of the new replacement freewheels went over to the Hyperdrive Cog Style tooth pattern.

It is a freewheel. it is not a cassette. They are two very different things.

@Joto. Try a hyper glide style freewheel. They are inexpensive and I think you'll find they really improve shifting.

Welcome to the forums. I think your should take close-up pics the next time. Easier to make out.

Thanks again! Sorry about my terms, I used wrong words on my previous post too. English word "cassette" is nearly same on my language, but that doesn't mean the same part than in english, so I mixed up.

Chain doesn't stay properly on teeth on the smallest sprocket. I think replacing only chain wouldn't be good idea?

I would like to use as similar parts as possible, that's why I asked about that UG-marking. If I change it to Hyperglide, can I use same/same kind of axle or does it need different axle? No need to replace friction shifter and rear derailleur with Hyperglide?

The old axle had scratches, how I know it should be replaced?

What is your native language? Maybe we have a member who speaks this and can help with translation?

If the chain is jumping off towards the outside on the small sprocket, the High Limit screw might need adjusting. Check to see if the derailleur jockey wheel is further out then the small sprocket. Tighten the screw to move the jockey wheel towards the smallest sprocket until it sits right below it.

This should solve that issue. I agree. try using the original freewheel and current chain and see if shifting is better. I'm guessing your axle is fine.

Please post more pictures including closeups of the axle, derailleurs, shifters, and the entire bike. This will help guide you better.

Chain isn't jumping off from the sprocket. It just doesn't stay on teeth, especially when pedalling hard. Chain somehow jumps over one tooth. I think that happens because chain or/and sprocket are worn. Recently it has gotten worse, sometimes that same thing happens on other sprockets too. I think that adjusting limit screws doesn't fix that problem.
