Hi All,

seems like it's been years since I've posted anything on here. I've been looking for a decent little road bike for my 9 year old son. Yesterday I was cruising the local CL and came across an ad for this Windsor bike. The guy said he didn't like it and he was 5'10" crazy!. Well, 4 hours and $150.00 later my son is the proud owner of this Windsor Competition. It has the same Mexinelli frame as the Profesional just kitted with Suntour Cyclone instead of Campy. Such a beautiful bike! I even think the bar tape is original! Anyway, I thought you guys would dig it. Date codes on the Suntour date it at a 1976. I've never seen pics of a Competition only Profesionals. I'll report back on how it rides. I'm pretty stoked that the 5'10" guy didn't like the ride of this 50cm frame. He even threw in a brand new $50 Fox helmet. I wish I could find these in my size.....

After doing a little research I think this is a bone stock 1976 Competition. The years are a bit varied, The frame code is 7525. Maybe this means the frame was built in 1975? The Suntour date code on the rear derailleur is from Feb 1976, the front derailleur is from May of 1975. The hubs are Sun Shine and look pretty nice. The spec is the same as the 1979 model in the catalog online. Items that are spec'd as Windsor in the catalog vary. These have Super Champion "Gentleman" clinchers, the anodizing is barely worn from the braking surfaces. I would imagine that these were built as supplies were available. The decals are pretty poor, but the hand painted pinstriping looks great. My son loves it, the friction down tube shifters are a challenge though. Probably need to find some old suntour bar cons. Gran Compe stem is really nice. It looks like the mexican made items take on the mexinelli angle the "windsor" headset looks very campyish. I wonder if the chrome plating on the lugs was done in Mexico because it doesn't seem like it's good quality. The Record de hora stamp on the bars is pretty cool! Here are some more random pics from our ride today. My son got a kick out of riding a bike that's the same age as his dad.

I'm assuming that this Windsor has a Suntour freewheel, so a modern 8-speed chain and some lubrication to the cable and to the shifter pivot should be able to effect a huge improvement in shifting ease and speed. I vote to keep it stock!

Good score, especially in that it has those clincher rims, which are slightly wider than comparable Mavic Module E or E2 rims. Expect tire changes to be somewhat on the tight side.

Yeah, he's stoked for sure. Nervous to take his hands off the narrow bars. The stem is long, it doesn't help. The cheng shins he's rolling go on pretty easy. He's already a solid ripper on the mtn bike, once he gets comfortable with the sharp geometry and it's on.
