Masi Gran Criterium? What is it exactly? Italian or US?

Hi Guys,

I picked up this bike last week. Seemingly low mileage but sadly it needs a respray. I think its a 75' based on the lugs and the decals. Could you guys help me out what i have exactly here? Is it a italian masi or a California one?

Thx,

Dirk-Jan

Italian built, sold through Alberto Masi from the Vigorelli.
Date code is November 1979.
Some nice embellishments, a decent amount of rust as you know.
A 56 cm in Masi measure, center to tip top of the seat lug.

I'd say it needs some careful paint touch up, but not a respray. Nice panto/drillium. Are the cranks or derailleur similarly done? Can you post pics of the fork crown and drive train? Sweet find.

The build date actually causes me to think that it already has been repainted once.
This would be the latest Gran Criterium from Italy I have seen.
Could well be original.
If a factory respray usually there is a number stamp on the bottom of one bottom bracket chain stay spigots.

Hi Repechage!

Thx for your answer. What makes it actually Italian and how do you know the production date?

regards,

Dirk-jan

The small numbers in the bottom bracket shell have the code. The stamping sequence for the size is not seen on the USA made bikes. The fork crown is exclusive to Italy Vigorelli production. Bob Hovey's Masi pages has a good article on this and registry tables that you will probably want to review. Did someone claim this was an American bike?

Nope. I bought it from the son of the original owner. He told me hit was the bike from his dad who've picked it up in Italy. So indeed that story could be true..

Hello HerrJaans, welcome to the forums. Beautiful bike. I agree with jeirvine I don't see the need for a repaint but a good cleaning and some touch up. There are losts of post on here about an acid bath to help remove rust, if you have space that may be some to look into. I suspect once you get the parts stripped and clean and wax that frame it will look pretty good.

any chance we can see more pics?

BTW some of the guys here have unbelievable knowledge of bikes, I am constantly amazed at what some of them come up with.

No quibble that it is Italian. However I do not see a fork crown on Bob's site that matches this one. It is similar to the ones with slotted shoulders, but the slot does not appear to go around like the crowns on Bob's site. I have played with the photos for 30 minutes and do not see it. What do you see that I don't?

While the image with the brake lever has poor depth of field, it is similar to what I have seen on other Italian Masis. The American bikes don't use a crown with a slot on the side, closest would be the twin plate crown where the distance between the plates is much more generous. Bob does not have everything. It is very comprehensive though.
New Page 1
There is variation in the slots beyond what is documented there.
If this bike has original paint then it is kind of an outlier. Well after the Prestige was firmly established.
Maybe the client always wanted a Gran Criterium.

Ah. I didn't think to look closely at the brake lever photo. The slotting is more evident in that shot, even with the lack of depth in the photo. Thanks for the explanation. Thought my eyes were going...well they are but not quite that far yet.
