Got me a new riding partner!!

My 8 year old has been riding a little Mongoose with 20" rims and we ride a little ways together here and there not much though. We bought a Schwinn Ranger 2.6fs with 26" rims back in 2005 for my wife. Its really just been sitting unused for a long time. I got to thinking that maybe she could fit it. After I saw her freind that lives a few houses down on a bigger bike I thought she should be able to ride that Schwinn. I put the seat all the way down and moved it forward and man if it don't fit pretty well! She is so excited! Any thoughts as to what I can do to make this thing roll a little better for road riding? I measured the frame and it comes in at 16" from center of crank to seat post insert.

Nice, looks like she might hand your ass to you one day.

Slam the stem
Rotate the bars so they drop down
19/21/23mm Racing slicks
Remove reflectors (+5-10km/h)
Remove dork disc (similar gain)
Racing seat (No padding!)
Remove kickstand
Clipless pedals
Rigid fork
Titanium water bottle bolts
Ceramic bearings

The helmet is already red so i wouldn't worry too much.

Get some narrow 26 X 1.5 road tires and tubes. These are hard to beat price wise.

Nice! Great looking kid, and I can tell she already has good form!

Tires. Lighter, more supple tires will help a lot. I have twin 12 year old daughters, last year when it was time to get "adult" sized bikes, we decided to upcycle some donor bikes. One of the girls got 650b and a light set of tires, the other 26", not so light tires. The 26 incher had trouble keeping up with the 650b. I bought some lighter, more supple tires, and bingo, neck and neck.

Velo Orange has some

Got rid of all reflectors. Turned the handles bar down some and it gave her less reach and a little bend in the arms. Got rid of the dork disk...assume that is the plastic around the cog? Got rid of plastic chain guard and wheel reflectors. Going to order tires this weekend...will those forte`s be the lightest of the suggestions? I need knew brakes for it any suggestions? How do I measure the fork so I can look for a rigid one?

For brakes, it's hard to beat Tektros for the price.

Is the fork threaded? If so, just pull out the current one and measure the steer tube. Then go with something like this:

Gotcha on the brakes. Now for the cable, just order standard brake cable? On the Fork, I have never attempted to remove a fork...quick down and dirty on how to do that?

There are two types of brake cable, road and mountain. The cable ends are different. Get mountain.

removing a threaded fork seems more intimidating than it is. Just remove the stem and loosen the headset with your handy dandy pipe wrench. Putting it back together takes a little more finesse, but not much. How tos are widely available on YouTube.

Changing out a fork on a big box Schwinn? Not the best economic move. Might as well look for another bike.

Maybe I should leave the fork as is...i don't think it will be that much difference in her riding?

Gloves, gloves, gloves. First thing we do during an unintentional dismount is to protect our face and body by putting our hands out.

Protect the paws.
