New bar tape elkskin covers or Brooks leather.

Help me decide, new bar tape Velo Orange elkskin covers, or Brooks leather bar tape. Here's the Cinelli bars I'm going to redo.
Not sure why the picture posted upside down.

Cinelli used to sell a sewn on leather bar set, but it was a 64 bar not a track bend like that.

@eschlwc - does the honey color actually look like Brooks Honey? Brooks Brown? A Cross? I love Fizik bar tape.

I've used both for over two years apiece. My preference is for the VO elk hide, sewn over an underwrap of thick cloth tape. The spiral texture of the cloth tape improves both looks and feel, imo.

velo, it looks like the tape in the pic. i've had the fizik honey on two bikes, and loved it.

my experience with real leather is akin to my experience with cotton. it's the best for about two weeks, then looks and feels awful.

I've got the opposite opinion, Leather looks all new and stiff for a week or two then it gets nice and dirty and all proper looking and feels wonderful

Cinelli now sells a cork tape with nice perforations. They call them their new "Art" series tapes....
I have used their cork tape since they came out in the late 80's and had always loved their looks and feel,.....but at around 36 bucks a set for this new perforated version, I had to tell Cinelli that they could kiss my butt before I pay such exorbitant prices for such as all that's different from the regular cork tape that usually sell for 14 bucks a set or less!, is they ran these through a hole punching machine in the factory....
Is Cinelli planning on sending the profits to Greece to bail them out or something????..

Neither. If you just need leather tape, Handlebra is the way to go. Otherwise, Fizik mikrotek.

If I had to chose between vo and Brooks, go with the elkhide.

I've got the Elk hide, and have loved it for 5-6 years now. Here is a picture of it new, I don't have one more recent, but it has a nice aged look to it.

I like fizik too. You can re wrap as much as you want. I even have it on a steering wheel (sold the car, still have the wheel).

Wine corks for bar end plugs.

I keep a cork screw on the tool board.

Love it! Thanks, my Clydesdale rear end went for a very short ride tonight with my good carbon fiber friend. Needless to say, see rule #47 I am full on beer, and will take another peek at this thread in the morning. Got a quick 6 miles in, 40 degrees and a brisk North Dakota wind.

Thanks for everybody's help. In the end I decided on something different. Kind of expensive, but I ordered sew on leather from Walnut Studiolo. Got them in dark brown to match my Brooks saddle. Can't wait for them to get here. Here's a link to what I ordered. Sew-on Leather Bicycle Handlebar Tape Wraps | Leather handlebar tape & bicycle accessories | Walnut Studiolo

+1 I agree, the Elk hide tape is thicker and more comfortable to use although the Brooks tape looks better. Both hold up for years and years once they are applied.

Uh oh. Does that mean you'd like your brake hoods to match?
I have tried dying these before. Never liked the look all that much.
But that could just be me.

Deda makes a "Faux" Leather Bar Tape that is priced reasonably and all but Bullet proof.

Rootboy, no they don't need to match. I think the contrast will look nice. Thanks again for your help!

That's good pushrod. I think the contrast will look nice too. They darken up slightly with exposure to light, and use.

Wish I could figure out the dyeing thing. It would look good if they were dyed while flat, then formed. But I tried it and since I have to soak them in water to form them, it doesn't work. And dyeing them after they're formed doesn't work so well either.

At any rate, I think these will look great with brown elk skin.

These are ok, but not all that cushy and you have to be careful when wrapping them to hide the awful silver "deda" logo. I've done a couple of them up, but one is about to be replaced with leather and I'm going to do cloth and shellac over the other.
