The Wearing Of (Vintage?) Leader/Champion Jerseys When Neither Leader Nor Champion

Not exactly sure where to ask this, but here we go.

Rule 16 says "Respect The Jersey: Championship and race leader jerseys must only be worn if you’ve won the championship or led the race." Velominati ? The Rules

Does this rule apply with equal force to leader and championship jerseys of vintage eras?

Suppose you take a fancy to the Vintage Wool Swiss Champion Jersey here Swiss Champion Wool Jersey - Vintage Velos - is wearing that as much of a violation as wearing a modern day Tour De France Yellow Jersey replica like TOUR DE FRANCE yellow jersey 2014 | Tour de France | BOBSHOP

Does this rule apply with equal force to leader jerseys from obscure races as to leader jerseys from major races?

For example, here is a fetching blue leaders jersey from the Tour De L'Aube. Vintage Cycling Leaders Jersey Tour de L'Aude France Size 2 NOS | eBay The Tour De what? Exactly. If you happen to fancy this shade of blue, can you get away with wearing it, because no-one other than a real cycling nut will recognize it as a leader's jersey?

Can you ever excuse violating this rule simply because you like the color of the jersey?

Suppose you are a man who likes pink. Hey, we are out there. And you need, like we "need" cycling anything, a long sleeve jersey for days when it is a touch chilly for a short sleeve jersey but not cold or wet enough for a Gabba. A men's long sleeve jersey in pink is not an easy thing to find, especially not for a good price. One day your wife points out a pink long sleeve jersey is on sale. But it happens to be a replica of the Giro D'Italia's leader jersey. What do you do? Giro D`Italia 2014 Overall Leaders Pink Jersey - Long Sleeve | Prendas Ciclismo

Wear what you want to. "The Rules" are simply a guideline. For those who need it.

Know who you're going to be riding with. If you think you might offend their sensibilities, don't wear it. Making pretense that you earned the jersey, or wearing it in a race is definitely off-limits. I wouldn't wear it on a major organized ride that you need to register for, but that's my personal guideline.

I just don't, on general principle. Nor would I wear a Superbowl ring, Masters jacket or rodeo prize buckle.
But that's just me. Opinions and sensibilities vary.

A friend from France brought me a pair of replica jerseys from the 2013 TdF. Polka dot and green. They gather dust in the closet. I can't wear them - rules - and don't really want them as wall art.

My daughter, after reviewing the rules, says the pink jersey can be worn. According to her, you just say you're wearing it to support breast cancer victims. She is a cynical girl.

I get the point, but I have a USPS jersey I couldn't bring myself to wear for a long time because, well, pick your reason, but then I realized that was silly; it was just a nice jersey that I bought at a rummage sale for $2. Probably the most comfortable hot weather garment I have.

If you are going to rule that one cannot wear a leader or WC jersey, you might as well extend it to any pro jersey. Just sayin...

Now, that said, I would not wear a leader or WC jersey because they are just wrong on an OFG. Pro jersey I don't care as any pro jersey I would wear to match the bike. Mr. Fashion Conscious here.

If I go throw a football around with my son wearing a Tom Brady jersey am I breaking some rule I don't know about(not that I would wear a Tom Brady jersey or any football jersey in the first place). Do people actually believe stuff like this so they won't be in fear or embarrassment of being labeled by someone who read something on pompous site like Velominati.

When I got back into road bikes again in 2006 after many years of not riding, I didn't feel comfortable on my Colnago or any other pro bike. For a short while...

Screw that! Who do I have to impress or seek approval from!

I ride my bikes because I enjoy them! I wear jerseys because they match my bikes plus I like the colors and I like to be seen by drivers.

Sports apparel with athlete's names and team logos is a major business around the world so why should cycling be any different!

NFL Store, NFL Apparel, NFL Shop, Gear, Merchandise, Clothing, Gifts, Memorabilia

Sports Apparel, NFL Shop, NFL Jerseys - College Fan Gear, NBA Jerseys | FansEdge - Everything for the Fan

How about this one for athletic fan wear! World Champion Colors and all.

I guess that rules out most of the cycling attire worn at classic events like L'Eroica, Eroica California and similar venues!

@jyl - aren't jerseys very "revealing"? As in tight? I bought a Castelli cycling shirt/top/jersey - you know zip up front, short sleeves, water bottle pockets sewn onto the back. I bought this in about 2-3 sizes larger than I usually wear, when I weighed about 6 lbs less, and let's just say.....well it is/was quite revealing, leaving little to the imagination. I don't wear it at all.

Or are you talking about something else?

As far as the "rules"- just use your best judgement in the moment.

After I was diagnosed with skin cancer several years ago, I started to watch closely how I handled sun exposure. Nowadays I look like a guy from a Rivendell ad. Long sleeved shirt and knickers are part of the plan for sure.

I'm just happy to be out riding!

As for this jersey business, wear whatever you feel comfortable in and put in your miles.

Who really cares about jersey colors?

As others noted, why is a team/champion jersey verboten for cycling and not any other sport?

I wear my #10 Badger hockey jersey, signed by Mark Johnson, to all the games. I have season tickets. Lots of people there wearing team jerseys.

At the start of football season, my office has a wear your favorite jersey day. Most people wear a team jersey. Since I own no American football paraphernalia, I wear my Inter Milan futball jersey I bought on the beach in Mexico.

I do own a wool Frejus team jersey. I wear it at vintage events. I usually get a compliment or two.

On the other hand, I can see why some people may consider it Fredly to wear a team jersey. But I embraced my Fredliness a long time ago. Those who don't think they are Freds are only living in denial.

When cycling, I find it helps to wear stuff that doesn't make me miserable wearing it. Wearing stuff that is too tight, too loose, too garish, too shiny, etc. is misery. Likewise, wearing seersucker on anything but casual rides is just stupid - doesn't matter what Grant Petersen says.

Polyester and poly/cotton have this nasty habit of amplifying the stinky of long rides. Wool blends and flocked acrylics - not so much.

I buy Castelli shorts because they work and they don't result in saddle sores - not because some pro-racer used them on tour. I also ride in Sugoi, Aerotech, Moa, Casati, Woolistic, whatever happens to be on-sale at decent prices.

I usually buy two to three sizes up in cycling jerseys. Aerodynamics really don't matter at my age. Again, wool and wool blends work the best.

I'd rather have a Dirt Wolf after a ride than any of that synthetic crap the racers use.

By all means, though - if one has to be modern, garish, etc. a sense of humor is better than a sense of poseur - see https://www.facebook.com/74778410308...1660455440309/

I always took those Velominati rules as being done with at least a little tongue in cheek. My personal rule is that if you are KOM on any Strava segment anywhere, then you are technically World Champion on that segment, an are entitled to wear the rainbow stripes. For me that means a couple pairs of socks.

Clever daughter! But, I think as long as you are not wearing the entire kit, who says you can't enjoy your cool TDF green jersey on a casual ride??

I got most of my jerseys from the Tour of California store, when they were on super sale for $15 or $20 each!Leader, green, Best Young Rider - I wear em all !
