Congrats. Ride the snot out of it and maybe take some pics along the way. I'd give that saddle a chance before replacing it assuming no significant damage to it.

Good call IMO. I used to have a Trek 1000 roughly same vintage as the Schwinn, aluminum frame, and riding it was like being beat with an aluminum baseball bat. I've since been biased against the older aluminum stuff. Enjoy!

I'll agree. The merckx is not one of the good ones, but a lower end model in the recognizable livery. It sounds like you need a bike to ride the crap out of. As a daily rider I'd go with the schwinn.

In case anyone was curious, I ended up with the Eddy Merckx and paid $160. I will be adding dark blue bar tape to match the eddy Merckx sticker, and putting new tires on it, as well as new brake pads. I am leaving the pedals as they are for now, and will be looking for a seat replacement. Overall very happy with my purchase. I took it down to a local bike shop and they were in aw when I brought it in due to the condition and paint job, they told me I stole the bike at $160. Thank you guys again for giving me great information!

I would have gone with the Schwinn myself. I have a Schwinn 754 that I bought new, and a couple of bonded aluminum Treks. I don't find the ride excessively rough, but I prefer responsive handling. I got rid of my lst steel bike last year as it never handled the way the Schwinn and Treks do.
The Merckx probably has more Collector Value, and could probably be sold for more when the time comes. But it has 6-speed friction shifting and a freewheel doesn't it?
The Schwinn would have given you Shimano 7-speed with rider selectable index or friction shifting a with a cassette and freehub.
If you test rode the Merckx and Trek the way they are pictured, the Merckx is way too big for you, and the Schwinn would have been sized perfectly.
The Merckx also needs a lot of work from your description, which doesn't make a lot of sense for you to purchase since you state that you have limited funds, and want a daily driver. Getting on and off an oversized frame over and over again gets old fast on a daily driver.
