What's the best deal you've ever got?

I went to the Dekalb County Police auction out of curiosity once. Back around 1987 or so. Spotted a practically new Fuji DelRey. Several bidders pushed up price. I bid $80 & took it home. Still have it. Nice ride.

Strong Walker
150€ for a 46cm 26" very nice half-built frame that had, among other things, a Superrecord 1st Gen derailleur, and a set of SR cranks in nice nick hanging on it. Sold frame and wheels on for the same price

I seem to always "pay too much" for the stuff I want. I miss all the bargains and deals, or I second guess myself out of them.
However, the thing that I thought of first was the wheels I got from @jmeb.
Phil Wood / Super Champion 40 spoke wheels. Not the lightest by a long shot, but by far the smoothest wheels I've ever had the fortune of riding. Putting these on my Trek 720 makes the bike ride like the equivalent of a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado. For realz.
I think the deal we settled on was a Huret cable stop, Suntour Mighty Shifter thumb shifters, and a set of Cannondale panniers.

So if you happen to have a claw-mount (ideally that's claw bolts on) derailleur that functions a bit better than the Huret Allvit let me know. It and the wheelset (which appears to be steel although pretty light) are probably getting replaced.
Rims:
Other teaser photos of what I suspect is a bike made right when Raleigh was taking over Carlton based on the schizo labeling (Raleigh headbadge, Carlton downtube transfers). It is a Carlton/Raleigh Catalina in just my size. Paint and chrome are all in beautiful-but-not-perfect shape.
I have a feeling that this "deal" at $120 is going to be a long project....

I think the best deals I got on bikes (excluding a free Trek 620) are ones that ended going to my daughter. A Basso Gap for $15 and a Raleigh Team Professional for $160.

Funny you mention it. Today I picked up what is the oldest component laden bike in my fleet. And then spent a few hours trying this thing--supposedly a derailleur--to work well (note -- chain not attached in the picture...I at least got that right)
So if you happen to have a claw-mount (ideally that's claw bolts on) derailleur that functions a bit better than the Huret Allvit let me know. It and the wheelset (which appears to be steel although pretty light) are probably getting replaced.

Based on ultimate potential and the fact that the only other one of these I have seen on here is one of the coolest bikes I have ever seen, the red, blue and chrome one in the show us your french bikes thread? I think you are close enough.

Probably best deal: my basically NOS Univega Nuovo Sport for $95. Bought it when it was 27 years old and it still had bike shop protective plastic sleeve over one side of the handlebars.
Yeah, a "mid-grade" bike, sure. But what a helluva mid-grade bike! A 1986 model, it's got a couple hundred miles on it now, but I need to put new tires on it before I ride it again. They're just too old now.
Although... My Cannondale ST600 was only five bucks more. And it came with a Brooks Pro. Plus tens of thousands of miles of experience on it. Hmmmmmm...

I think it depends on how you quantify "deal", being plain old capitalist Americans and proud of it, I think we usually think of the best deal being cheap. Anyway in my mind my Merz's were the best deal, spendy yes, but to me "priceless"

I got my 87 Bridgestone 550 for the low low price of free. It looked brand new. Still had all of the original Suntour 12 speed indexed drivetrain, tires looked brand new, no wear on the brake tracks, etc. It had been hanging in the original owner's garage since purchased new all those years ago. He gave it to me as a tip for helping him decide which recumbent trike to get, and then building it up for him and delivering it.
My Mongoose was also a great deal. I gave $25 for it. Full Deore LX, triple butted chromoly, still had machining marks on the chainring teeth.
Both bikes have been somewhat modernized, and I have put over 500 miles a year on both of them since I got them. That doesn't sound like a lot, but when you have 16 bikes it's hard to rack up the miles on any individual bike.

I bought this beautiful 1997 Trek 750 last summer. A '90s MultiTrack in this condition generally goes for well over $200 in my local market, and I was happy to give the man every one of the 65 dollars he was asking for it. I got lucky -- I happened to see the Craigslist ad 19 minutes after it was posted, and was the first to call.

I have been given a few bikes over the years when people find out about my love for old road bikes. One is a 1971 Stella with campy stuff and another is a 1985 Trek 600 all original, never ridden(I gave this to my future son in law). Once I answered a craigslist add for a Campagnolo rear derailer for $15. When I got to the man's house , he offered me a set of Campy(same 1972 vintage) high flange hubs laced with Stella spokes to Rigida blue label clinchers in fine condition for $40 for the pair including a nice Regina Oro freewheel and chain. AND since I bought those he threw in all his spare parts, pre-Cinelli Unicanitor saddle, and Campy tools( 3 medium sized boxes) from his racing days! It seems he had no one to pass this stuff along to. Really good day! Joe
