Me and My Schwinn

I hope you don't mind a short hijack of this thread... I was born in Manchester, NH have still have relatives in Bedford, NH and Meredith, NH. Back in the late 80's & early 90's when I was in the Coast Guard and stationed in Boston, MA, a bunch of us "Coasties" would go up into NH in the winter and go skiing at Gunstock, Waterville Valley, Loon, and Cannon Mt. We went up Route 16 a few times up to North Conway and Bartlett to Attitash ski area too. Lots of fun back in those days!
Back on topic... My older sister had an old Schwinn Collegiate back in the day. As a little kid, I used to get in trouble when I'd sneak it out of the garage and ride it when she wasn't looking. It was then that my parents realized that I needed a bigger bike.

I live about 50 miles northwest of Manchester in the Lake Sunapee area. NH is a great place for cycling--- for about 8 months of the year. One has to be really hardy or brain-dead to ride December-March, although I've gone several years now without missing at least one ride in each winter month. So I guess I qualify!
I missed my 400 miles in August by a long shot. I only managed about 150 because on August 3rd I went over the handlebars MTBing and fractured 5 ribs. Sort of slowed me down. Hopefully I can resume my schedule in September.

Well last month I wasn't able to get my 100 miles in. I only got in eighty. I did get my daughter to ride with me to the skate park though, so she has made a 12.1 mile ride now. At first she wanted to try to ride her bike on some of the ramps like some of the boys were doing, but she chickened out in the end. (Which is good as we were pretty far from home if she hurt herself doing that)
The last few months I've been alternating between jogging and biking. If I have a half hour or less available I jog, and if I have more than a half hour I bike. I was taking my bike with me to my daughter's swim practice and then going to bike trail to get in 10 miles while she was doing laps. A few days ago I did that and had to hurry, as it was getting a bit dark on the last mile. I may have to cut that down to 6 or 7 miles, or just plan on jogging on those days.
So far for October I've got 45 miles in, and am planning on getting a few miles in today and hopefully 12 more tomorrow.

For me, the best way to increase my mileage is to use my bike for useful things such as commuting and shopping. The last three years or so have seen year over year increases. I seem to be reaping a whole lot of health benefits from it.

Once in a while I ride my bike to the coin shop in town, which is a 12.5 mile ride round trip if i stay mostly on the bike trail. It's only about 4 or 5 miles if I drive or ride on the roads. I've ridden to a few different restaurants too, which are along the same routes as the coin shop (one is right next door)
Mostly though I ride on the trail to get some exercise and let my mind wander or to spend some time with my wife and/or my daughter.
I'm up to 70 miles for the month now.

Keep up the great work!
I had to stay off my bikes for a month and wow did I miss the riding. First time back on was Saturday and I selected the '62 Schwinn Continental. It was sleeting for about half of the ride, but I didn't care! Heading out today for a ride with @BluesDaddy and another friend. The 23 miles begins with a climb from about 800 and tops out in the pass at about 1800 for the first 7 miles. What a test for out of shape legs!

Also glad to hear you are back in the saddle again Pastor Bob I don't know about a 1000 climb; I am pretty sure there's nothing like that here in Indiana. I got my 100 miles for the month (I'm at 104). I don't think I'll get any in today. In addition to a busy day, it's also cold, windy, and rainy. It's getting harder to find daylight to ride in, and that's only get harder as the days get shorter.

I hope everyone has had a good Thanksgiving.
I somehow found the time to get in 119 miles in November. It snowed once this past month and to my surprise, they plowed the trail. My total for the year is 941, and I am hoping to reach 1000 miles by year's end. I'm only hoping for 70 miles this month, as that's what it will take to reach the 1000 mile mark, and it's pretty unrealistic to think I will do much biking after say the 20th.
In the past few months I have taken up jogging too (earlier I mentioned wanting to try a triathlon next year) and have run 2 5k races and a 4 mile race. A few weeks ago I started swimming too and am able to swim the 500 yard swim that most sprint triathlons around start out with fairly easily. (I swam in HS and had a scholarship for college, but...) I'm hoping to be swimming a 1/2 mile a day, twice a week by spring. Last night I swam 700 yards, so I am mostly there, and that was after a nine mile bike ride.
Have a great day!

Well, I got my 1000th mile in on December 8th and then the holiday season hit. I haven't been on the bike since, and probably won't be til the new year at least. When I finished my ride on the 8th, I was at 999 miles. So I rode around the neighborhood for a few minutes until Runtastic chimed in that I rode 1 mile. I'm glad I did that, as things got even busier than normal this year. On the other hand, I may have been more inclined to find the time for one last bike ride if I still needed that mile. My mileage for December is at 67 miles, which earlier this year would have been great.
Merry Christmas,
J White
