Raleigh 3 Speed from Cl

I got this Raleigh 3 speed from craigslist the other day. I can't wait to clean it up and ride it. But for now, I'm trying to figure out more information about it. I looked at Sheldon Brown's info on dating 3 speeds but still couldn't figure it out. Maybe somewhere here has some ideas?

Looks like a 60s to early 70s "Sports" bike. Is there a date on the hub?

I recently restored and resold an identical bike. I love those old 3-speeds.

Was it tricky? This is my first try at a 3 speed. I have worked on a decent number of ten speeds although, my skills are very raw. I have no idea how the shifting system on this bike works, let alone how to tune it.

Also, I stared at the rear hub for a while before finally deciding text might be easier to find if I cleaned it a bit. Looks like the bike is from 1965. I'll post a picture tomorrow, but I'm assuming that's what the 65 means, I also thought the bike was early 60's based on catalogues and the bottom bracket serial number.

Welcome to the club! I've been in love with thses bikes since I was a kid and still have as much fun riding them today
as I did then. You've got a nice one there. There's not much involved with adjusting the hub. Those SA AW hubs are
bulletproof. 99% of the time, shifting problems can be fixed with only cable adjustment. I see that you bike has a
fully cased shifter cable running to a fulcrum clip on the chain stay. This isn't the original method for your bike
and IMO, won't work as well as the fulcrum clip mounted on the top tube and open cable running over a seat tube mounted
wheel to the index chain like it had originally. If this were my project, I'd return the shifter routing to the
original style. Good luck. Looks like a fun project.

Without a drive-side pic showing decals, it's a bit hard to say for sure, but I think 1965 seems right given what I can see.

I squirted some degreaser that I got at an auto parts store into the hub to clean it out, then re-oiled it and it worked fine. You need to adjust the shift cable so that it has very little or no slack when it is in the highest gear, and then it should shift easily into the other 2 gears.

See Kurt's excellent Headbadge site:

Serial convention:

This serial system replaced the "RA" series that preceeded it and was the first major system to use numerals exclusively.

The system consists of a seven-digit serial - beginning with #1000000 in 1963 - running up to the #4600000-#4800000 range by 1969, at which point, it was discontinued.
'65 sounds just about right.

And most of the rest of that 1% that doesn't respond to cable adjustment will respond to a solvent flush and fresh oil.
