26" Tire Recommendations

Just got a new to me Trek 930 rigid mountain bike and it came with knobbies. I mostly ride on the street and bike paths, but also some light trails. I'm looking for something that will roll a little better on the street, but won't be terrible on the trails.

I put some Kenda V-cut tires on my Prairie Breaker and have used them for some highway miles and banging away on the single track; they seem to hold up pretty well, for the price, and they roll better than anything with knobbies, IMHO.

Lots of people will recommend Panaracer Paselas, but I've no experience with the wider 26" models, even though I like them a lot on my 700c and 27" road bikes.

I have Kenda K908 Pathfinders on my all-arounder. They're an ok compromise. Other tires I have been looking at are Kenda K847 Kross Plus, Serfas Deputy, & Schwalbe Hurricane HS 352.

i like my CONTI Touring Plus quite a bit: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-s...o/DSCF7481.JPG

Bit of tread, roll great on pavement. I ride them on dirt, gravel, grit, pavement, whatever....

Also - I have a set of 700 Panaracer Paselas. Pretty good on pavement. No flats to complain about.

Pasela 1.75's mostly for paved/gravel road. Their ok on unchallenging single tack as long as it's dry. Any mud and forget about it.

That (and the cheap price) is exactly why I went for the Kenda V-Cut; the Paselas looked a little too slick for around here. Ironically, I have yet to ride the V-cuts in the wet, so I don't really know if they're any better for that kind of thing

Or go really FAT, if they will fit, with Maxxis Hook Worms at 26X2.5. I'm running these on my '86 Trek 830 Antelope at about 25-30 PSI. Cushy, yet they still roll very nicely on the gravel paths. Lately I've been pulling a single wheel trailer with my 19lb Corgi riding along. As far as I'm concerned, I couldn't do any better.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm debating now between the Michelin Country Rocks and the Kenda Kross. Both are on Amazon Prime and reasonable.

Depends on how aggressive you want to get. I have an old pair of Cheng Shins that are no longer available, but have a center diamond tread with knobs on the side like this Kenda Krisp:

Nashbar and Performance Bike have 1.25" x 26" slicks that fit my old rigid MTB rims very well and roll great. Made the bike MUCH faster. And these tires are inexpensive.

I wound up going with these. Just took a test ride around the neighborhood and so far they are exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks

I have and like the Continental "Travel Contact" 26" x 1.75". They have sort of a smoother section in the center with light knobs laterally.

- I'll second the Travel CONTACT tires. Road a set for about 3 years with no problems. Then on a ride home from work I road through - SOMETHING - and it filled the smooth flat part with sharp bits of I-don't-know-what. It was time to retire them anyway.

Now I'm giving the Touring Plus CONTI's a try. So far so good. still!

that's my pic. I was happy how that turned out. And I'm really liking the Google photo editor. Pretty good for "free" (I'm sure it's not free, but I have no idea how Google is extracting it's billions from me....)
i also put this collage of tire pic together for a facebook profile thing.... i thought it was interesting with the different road surfaces:
REMEMBER Kids! Don't try this photographing and bike riding at home! Get out on the road and do it! And make sure it's a camera you're willing to see hit the pavement and maybe not work again...

I have a Trek 930 rigid that used to have Michelin City tire with Protek plus. It was a decent tire for roads, but not great on trails. Since I never use this bike on roads, I think what I want to do it to use the bike more on local mountain biking trails where my son rides with his team and maybe some local crushed limestone trails. A LBS was having a going out of business sale and so I bought a knobby tire for the front and a semi slick knobby for the back. If this doesn't work, I might mount an old Specialized tire we took off my son's mountain bike last season.

Anyhow, these are the tires I bought.
The front tire. https://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Kenda-.../dp/B00JLFMOEA
The back tire is like this, but it is a Sunlite Kenda branded tire. Amazon.com : Kenda Krisp 26 x 2.0 Black Steel : Bike Tires : Sports & Outdoors
