It can, in friction mode. But I was referring to one of the Sturmey Archer specific ones, like this.

Really nice looking bike. With the plain horizontal dropouts it seems pretty perfect for this build.

It's kinda too bad it has cable stop and cable guide for a derailleur. Other than that, it would be perfect.

Are you saying I should Drew it?!

But seriously, you're right, that would make it perfect. Oh well.

And thanks for the compliments, everyone!

Hey, here's something you guys can help with. On the forward cable stop for the rear brake, there are 2 braze ons. When I look at my "before" photos, it looks like the housing goes right through the first one and stops at the second one... But the brake housing won't fit through the first one. It's even too small for derailleur housing. It appears to be just a normal slotted stop. I don't get it. What am I supposed to do here?

Well, no... but if your paint were trashed, and if the stays weren't chromed, I might.

I have a Falcon that's been my main commuter, though temporarily retired now. 531 main triangle, no derailleur hanger, no shifter boss; generally the same kinds of braze-on stops as your Raleigh. But mine has no chrome, and what little paint is left on the frame is not original anyway. So it's getting repainted soon. I'm pretty sure some cable stops are getting filed off first.

One of my bikes has two cable guides like that. The forward one is just a ring that the ferrule would not fit through, but if I took the ferrule off, I could slip the housing through and then put the ferrule on.

I like the cable routing on the down tube, using the original fittings. On my Kabuki that I converted to 3 speeds, the original cable guide is a small pulley on the bottom bracket. It works perfectly with a down tube mounted fulcrum clamp.

That's how my JRJ is, and that's what I expected here. But on this bike the housing won't fit through at all, ferrule or no. I'm pretty confused about it when I look at my before shots.

The front one on my GS is open nice and wide, and brake housing fits through it just fine. Maybe yours got crimped at some point?

That could make sense. The bike was definitely crashed at some point and almost all the damage is on the right. I'll take a look at this tonight.

I can take a picture if that would be helpful. Mine is mostly stripped down and waiting for a couple items for the build, so it wouldn't be much trouble.

+1. I have a Competition from 1974 that has the same rear cable stops. Mine had the same issue with the housing not fitting. I used a a small, flat bladed screw driver to slowly work it open. I figuerd it got squished somwhere along the way.

Gotcha, I will try that method.

Yup, mine is nowhere near that wide. You're right, it got pinched! I'll open it up tonight. Thanks for the help!

I'm guessing yours is a 1974 model. I had a 1975 model which I bought new in 1976. Mine had butted tubes and 531 forks and stays. Your decal seems to say frame tubes, i.e. not the stays. I took mine on long tours and commuted on it. I loved it. I'm sorry I sold it, but this was when it didn't occur to me that I could own more than one bike at a time.

Really nice work, as you always do.

How many teeth on the chainring and cog?

I think you're right about it being a '74, but then you never know what the heck Raleigh was doing at any given time, or if they used the right decals, paint colors, etc.

The cog is 18T and the chainring is... Well, I forget. It's the stock inner ring. 42, maybe?

Mine might have been a 40T, but I'm not sure.

I made several mods to my bike. I replaced the chainguard with a 56T chainring just to be cool. This way I had a 15-speed and a high gear I could never use.

Beautiful bike!
If I were ever to find one in my size it would definitely be done up in that manner.
