Shimano 600 front derailleur and triple crankset?
I am fixing up a 1985 (or there about) Cannondale ST400/500 for a friend to do a tour with us on this summer. When I got it, it was fairly stock-- double crank in front, with Shimano 600 derailleurs. I changed out the crankset to a triple, but wondering if the 600 front will work with a triple? Or, if not, what would be a good period compatible front derailleur to work with the triple? Of course, would need to be 31.8.
Anyone made this switch or suggest a replacement? My gut is the 600 won't work.

What crank set? With a moden compact drive you might get lucky. If you used an older crank with a 28,38,48 I'd still give it a try. If did something like a 28, 42, 52 you'' most likely need a '80s era triple. Look for a Deore or Suntour I think Mountain tech.

Check out vintagecannondale.com and look at the catalogs. If that bike is an all original st400 or st500 from 85 I would think it would have been equipped with a triple crank already and Suntour components, perhaps not. My 83 st500 is equipped with a Suntour cyclone ii front derailleur and triple crank.

85 ST400 was stock Shimano 600EX according to catalogue. A 45-50 front. I will check what I put on there in a bit.

If the 600 FD doesn't work- the Shimano FD-Z206 is a good, non-MTB choice.
The 86 or so Schwinn Voyageurs came with an MT-60 Deore rear derailleur and the Z206 in the front.

I'm using the Shimano FD-6207, 600EX FD with 28-40-50 triple but I'm also using bar end shifters so I can trim the fd depending on which rear cog i'm on. I also have the Shimano FD-Z204 that came off the donar bike that had the triple front and it's only 1-2 mm wider then the 600.

A few double front derailleurs can be made to work with a few triple cranksets, but this is not an option with the Shimano 600 for double cranksets.
Use a modern Sora front derailleur if you are using an indexed front shifter. Use a vintage Deore if you are using a frinction shifter.
