Hub cup wear - how much is too much?
I'm in the process of overhauling my early 80's Lotus Odyssey, and discovered some minor wear in the hub cups (both front and rear):
I know Saint Sheldon recommended replacement of cup or cone if there is any sign of a flaw, but I'm wondering if this is the widely accepted rule - especially when dealing with vintage kit that isn't so easy to replace?

I have a friend who is a bike mechanic, and as she refers to herself very "OCD". She would tell you to change those out absolutely. I would say put lots of grease, new ball bearings and get it adjusted perfectly. Keep an eye on it after that.
Go ride and have fun.

You can regrease and reuse, but when you adjust the cones - you will feel it. You won't get them adjusted "perfectly". Time to keep a lookout for new cups.

It looks like the hard chrome surface of the race had flaked off in some areas. That means the bearings will be rolling on the softer metal that used to be under the hard chrome finish. It might last some more miles, as such, but the wear on the cup will accelerate exponentially as more of the chrome flakes/wears off, so be ready to change out the cup race and cone (always do such as a set) more sooner than later......
