L'Ombra NJ #2 - Harvest Hustle
Ride is Now Full..
We're going to do it again. We're grinding out another full century ride (hustle: as in busy movement and activity not as in fraud and swindle) somewhere in central New Jersey much like we did in April. The date is Saturday September 26th (with the 27th for a rain date). In April we had enough mechanicals to make for some well spaced rest stops but it was about a 10 hour day and it could be again. Early start, lunch stop and long afternoon. This is an unsupported ride (no chase cars or TV camera motos-n-helicopters - we're on our own) through some very nice farm and forest countryside with some nice small villages here and there. Wide variety of road (& no road) conditions, rolling hills, pretty views and good people. Hoping for a bit less wind than in April but, heh, it's New Jersey and it's September ("when the gales of November come early").
Let me know, via PM, if you can join us and we'll do most of the coordination via email. We're just starting on route and logistics planning and will have that info later. Hope to see great folks and great bikes there again.

Hmmmmmmmm--- I might just need to take the weekend off and head south. I have an open invitation to crash at long time friends in Ridgewood (Bergen Co.). I'm guessing Mrs. PB would be down with me doing this ride.
After all, I now have tubulars mounted on my '83 Paramount. Plus it is all friction. Would you give me a pass if I still rode with SPD pedals?

I'm pretty sure I want to be there. Now, to make that happen.

By the way, I'd suggest, as last time, that those who are travelling a long distance stay at the Howard Johnson motel on Route 1. In fact I would suggest its parking lot might be a good start/end point. There are other motels on Route 1, but they are not bicycle accessible.

If you're looking to get Philly people you might want to pick a different weekend. That's the week of the pope's visit and they're shutting down a lot of roads and public transit. Might be hard to get around.

Ah, good to know! I will invite His Holiness. Anyone have his email address? He probably has to say mass or something on Sunday, but the poor guy will be bored stiff hanging around Philly all Saturday.

Aaron, for some reason I'm guessing you won't be standing in a long line for the stadium event Papal Mass.

@RobbieTunes, maybe you should work on finding a more current pop star to join us for the ride. Isn't P!nk from PA. She could car pool with @Prowler. Next time I bump into Steven Tyler (I ride by his house often), I'll invite him. He is certifiably C&V. His old Ford with the NH vanity plates "HONKIN" is featured at the beginning of this Oprah video.

I've been spending a fair bit of time in asbury park lately - it's so much fun there. They have a pinball museum, amazing food, great beach, great venues.

So, a training ride today, of sorts. Prowler emerged from his underground den in PA and came down for a ride on the W&OD MUP. Hot. Humid. Definitely sweaty weather. Things started out just fine:
We discovered at the halfway point, in Purcellville, that Velo Classique was open- a rarity on Mondays- and so spent a delightful hour with proprietor Wayne Bingham. Then, back on the trail. Here, we see Prowler gazing in awe at the succulent Virginia countryside:
Alas, by the time we arrived at Mile 42.5, where we left the cars, poor Prowler was becoming somewhat vexed at the heat and humidity. At least, so one presumes:
Alert observers will note that I remained only slightly moist throughout the ride, fresh as a daisy, ready to forge onward.

Speaking of training rides, @BluesDaddy and I tried to connect this past Saturday but our ride was rained out. The plan now is for a meet up again this Saturday morning for a 45+/- mile "Ride 'Round Ragged." BD wants to get us ready for the "Winni" we hope to do in August, or the the "Ride 'Round Lake Winnipesaukee" at 60 +/- miles.
Ragged Mountain basically sits between where the two of us live. About 20 miles of the ride will be gravel grinding on the Northern Rail Trail and following the double track service road in the Franklin Falls Park. I'll try to post pictures.

Forgot to mention that I'll be in your general part of the country next month, Bob.
Doing a 6 day tour in Vermont- the Champlain Valley- and looking forward to it.
Despite her recent and nasty bout with vertigo, Mrs. Doc also intends to be there.
Our daughter went to Middlebury, so some of the scenery will be familiar!

Nice job, gents! I was out yesterday morning with a friend for a couple of hours. It's our hottest and stickiest weather of the year, and that was about all we could take.

I doubt you'd have been able to have gone that far had you not eaten a goodly amount of powder coat before the ride.
