My Raleigh Got Pinched From My Backyard
Saturday night between about midnight and 7:00AM, my bar/ghetto/winter bike since last fall, the pristine Raleigh Sprite below, was stolen. It was unlocked on my Park bike stand, ready for a new FD, as the original got bent by a prospective buyer test riding it last Wednesday. The yard is fenced, with visibility only from my local LEO neighbor's yard.
Thankfully, not a big financial loss by any means, $125 FMV, about $50 out-of-pocket for the bike, including new tires. I am more spooked by the rather brazen crackhead walking and lurking between houses spaced apart only by about 20'.
Time to install wireless IP cams. Anyone have a low cost recommendation better than the D-Link DCS-932L, with IR? They're about $80/pair.
Meanwhile, in Japan....

That stinks. I don't trust my bikes being left out, even living in a "good neighborhood". Sad that people can be so crappy.

...I confess I've done this on occasion (bike in workstand overnight in back yard), and I suspect eventually it will bite me in the ass. Sorry.

Someone stole my roommates' brand new mountain bikes from our fully fenced yard a few years ago, during the day, while we were home. My cruiser was back there but it was locked and wasn't touched. My roommate and I heard the gate close, then went outside and the bikes were gone. Went up and down the alley but they were never seen again. Gotta lock it, no matter how safe your yard seems. I wonder if there's a way to lock it to the stand.

Thank god they left the stand. That is worth more than the bike. Sorry for your loss.

Dude, I had a bike stolen from in front of my kitchen window in my back yard, when I only stopped in for a couple hours, with the bike LOCKED to a gas line. It was a cable lock, and it wasn't even cut... it was pulled and mangled open.
Since then I have not used a cable for anything but locking wheels to frame. Only U-bolt or bar locks to lock the bike frame itself, no matter where it is. After that I got a U-bolt but my front wheel was stolen, so now both wheels get locked, as well as the seat and rack, no questions. Those are the main points of security for a bike. I also lock my helmet with the U-bolt, right through one of the vent holes. XD

Ugh. Sorry to hear it. I hate the violated feeling of having been robbed. I hope you are able to recover it (before it gets chopped or spray-bombed).
By the way, what's a LEO neighbor?

...I wonder if the guy will post a story in https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...und-story.html ?
"It was sitting there outside in a workstand, so I figured the previous owner had given up on fixing it. I really like it, and look at the condition of the paint."

If the potential new buyer knew were the bike was.. like in your back yard, I would suspect that person.
I had the same happen to PX10. It was in totally inclosed back porch unlocked... the neighbor took it when he moved out unexpectedly. He had seen me go in and out with it.

The only time I took out my 1978 Raleigh Competition GS for a spin and I locked it to a fence when I darted into a gasoline station for a whiz. When I came out, someone swiped the skewers. In less than 5 minutes, a petty criminal happened to walk by and steal about the only thing that didn't need a tool or an angle grinder to remove. For now on, if I am out with my Raleigh, I will pee in a back alley with one hand on holding on my junk and one hand holding on the Raleigh.

Oddjob2 that was your bike? I saw it on the local CL and email saying I'd push it to my networks. Sorry about your bike. I've been hearing about a lot of bike thefts in Detroit lately.

Man that is terrible. If they were a 'serious' theif then your Park repair stand would be gone as well.
I leave my old beat up and much beloved Schwinn World Sport on the back deck. I work nights and one day I just have a feeling it will be gone!

Well at least you can rule out the scrap metal collector.
You can rule me out as well. That stand would be mine.

Sorry to hear you got robbed. I lost a 800 lb smoker last year in a totally fenced yard. This was during daylight hours!
It is kind of pricey...but I bought this system 3 months ago and really like it. I can fire up the I-pad, phone, or PC anywhere there is WiFi and can see immediately what is making that noise at 4 AM. Can record weeks of video if your on vacation. The quality of the video is amazing. The first thing it caught was when I installed a new locking mailbox on the other side of my driveway. I came home one night to see my new 400 dollar mailbox bent over laying across the lawn. A quick check of the video revealed it was the mailman himself trying to cut hard in front of a parked car that lost control and flattened it. He offered to pay for it after I shown him the cameras on the corner of my house...he had no excuse for not leaving a note.

Lusting for a like new PCS-10, eh? Actually the feedback sports is easier to set up and take down. Plus it is aluminums, so no rain issues.

Good to know. I have a Park stand, not the best one but works well enough. Sometimes you have a bike on the stand and you want to pull a wheel or something off of another bike. I want two stands.

I bought a nice Gitane from a guy recently, I posted about it here. Well the original owner told me, " by the way, these wheels are not original." It turns out the wheels were stolen, at a stop light, during the day. This happened in Boston in the 1970s. Someone walked up, quick released the wheels and walked away. Crazy bold.

In the old west if you stole a mans horse that was his ride the penalty was a sky dance at the end of a rope. Bike thieves deserve the same swift justice.
